Removing Rust

What is the best stuff to use to remove rust before you start welding. I have some 24 foot square tubing that was left out in the weather and has some rust on it.Thanks

Reply:Outside.
Reply:There are lots of ways to do that...Sandblast it if you have the equipment and need it to be spotless...Or a wire wheel on an angle grinder would work nicely. Thats what I use. Not the best for pitted material, but its fast, easy, and works well on material with light rust. Good luck, and happy welding!! Reply:If you are simply cleaning the weld areas, a flap wheel, sanding pad, or grinding wheel will all work depending on the level of rust to be removed. I'm not a big fan of wire wheels unless it's for heavy rust removal prior to the above. They simply polish the rust usually not remove it. If it's for paint, DA sander, palm sander, orbital sander or belt sander are good choices before you weld or go with one of the rust convertion primers after the fact..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:x2 on the wire wheel. I keep one on a grinder all the time. Rollocs on a die grinder work on small areas also.Millermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:A Tiger disc on an angle grinder works great
Reply:Another good tool is a needle scaler, but probably more suited to channel, etc, and heavy rust. It sure works fast on the frame of my F-350. Only problem is you need a compressor, the bigger the better. My compressor puts out 31 CFM a minute and handles it quite well.
Reply:Wire wheel, and PLEASE wear a full face shield while doing it. One little splinter from it can cause you to loose an eye.
Reply:Someone suggest Navy Jelly? Anyone ever use it for rust removal?
Reply:Naval Jelly is great, I use it all the time... but it'd get expensive and messy to use on large parts. I mainly use it for cleaning up nuts and bolts off cars, and other small parts.__David Hillman
