my dad needs me to weld an exhause pipe for his kohler motor on his tractor.its a 1/16 thickness (wall size) and im thinking 3/32 7018 at about 65-70 amnps and i know thats a little cold for 3/32 but its really thin metal. or should i use 6013.if i should use 6013 can you give me some advise on the amp rangehelp would be appreciated thanks
Reply:Well.... I may get kicked off the forum for this...but have you thought about brazing it ?  Perhaps with a connecting sleeve... A picture of it would help on answers...Sometimes what is the most fun to do ... is not really the best solution...Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:i should probably mention thats its a butt joint.can you braze butt joints??
Reply:you might be able to do it with some 3/32 6010, but you are welding awful thin material for a stick welder.72 Chevy Cummins Project94 3500HD Welding Rig build Sold NOV 2011
Reply:1/16 6010 will do it for sure
Reply:i just thought of the fast freeze rodcan you get 1/16 6010 at tsc
Reply:Small engines are subject to constant vibrations... exhausts are usually already rusty ....A sleeve  which covered that ' butt joint' which was brazed...likely to last a lot longer.... What is your plan if you do burn through ?Last edited by GBM; 07-07-2011 at 10:46 PM.Weldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.

Reply:Try 6013 if you must stick weld, as it is a low penetration rod, its also known as a sheet metal rod.  6010 is a deep penetrating rod and will more likely blow through the thin metal.  If you know someone with a MIG with .024 wire and C25 gas shielding that would be ideal.Personally I would braze it before I used a stick welder, should outlast the rest of the exhaust system if done properly,"The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
Reply:I posted this earlier in his original thread, but might as well add it here since this one has gotten more responces. Reply:well with 1/16 6010 i should be able to run roughly 50 amps. i got another exhaust pipe the same size i plan on playing around with it and see how much heat i can put into it without it blowing through.i guess if i blow throught it ill have to gas weld it .but with 1/16 electrode i should be able to turn the heat down quite a bit. like i said its for a mower it doesnt have to be up to aerospace standards lol

Reply:whats an oklahoma tig weld?

Replystick welding adviceOL I think he is refering to stick tig, where u weld with one hand and feed another rod into the puddle to fill and control the heat, knocking the flux off the other rod is optional LOL. On a mufffler or thin sheet ok.... anything else you should look at a differnt approach haha. Its something you wont learn in school, I hope.  ps, the reason I said knocking the flux off was optional is i used to knock it off when i had to use this dirty trick, but recently i went to use it with 7018 to fill a big hole on a repair project and i couldnt get it to work so i left the flux on and it worked like a charmLast edited by Doug247; 07-08-2011 at 02:15 AM.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.

Reply:When I have to deal with poor fit up or a thin edge I have placed an OA filler rod in the gap and then stick welded the joint with it already in place.  This adds enough filler to help avoid blow through and is pretty easy to manage.Hobart LX235Victor 250 Oxy-Acetylene Rig (welding and cutting)Bobcat 773F-350, 1999, 4x4, 16' 10K# trailerOutdoor Wood Burner - 10 cords/year

Reply:i came up with something else. i made a homemade coupling so now it gonna be like welding a lap joint.but if i was welidng a butt joint i would use 6010 but ill probably use7018 now with the coupling

Reply:finally had the time to finishi was suprised at how much heat it actually tooki used 1/16 7018 at about 60 amps until i reached the part where the two pipes butted together then i turned it down to about 50 amps and moved away from it instead of toward it.worked out great and now we dont have to use ear plugs while cuttng grass anymore
