I got tired of kneeling on the driveway to practice, ( even though I've only "practiced" once now!)  so I decided to dive right in and make a table.  Spent $60 on material.  Found 2"x2"x36" remnants for .75cents a pound this morning at a local steel supply place.  Had to go across the street and buy a 2'x2'x1/4" sheet of steel.  $40 for the top, $20 in legs.  Not to bad I thought.Practiced running some beads, and didn't go so good.  I think I burned up half a spool of wire before deciding to go for it.  Ended up with this at the end of the day:Here's a weld I'm particularly proud of:Still ugly as can be, but considering I haven't EVER mig welded before today, and arc welded 20+ years ago in high school, I feel ok about it!  Not to mention that I got good penetration on two different thickness material too! It's nowhere near the quality of stuff I've seen on this website, but at least I'm not kneeling down anymore!!

Reply:It looks nice and clean now, but where are you going to put all of the junk that goes on top of it?  I mean clamps, scrap pieces, cutters, grinder disks.....   Somebody here mentioned that he couldn't get a picture of his welding table because of the two feet of junk piled on it!   I'm beginning to understand!Nice looking job though.   I plan to build a table after I get a concrete floor in the workshed.   Until then, I'm using an old metal clad door sitting on saw horses and a piece of I-beam clamped to it as an actual welding surface.  Ken

Reply:Originally Posted by chrisj13I'm trying a new approach...less is more.  I built a nice big shop table for my shed, and it's so buried with stuff that I don't have any room to work!  Seems it's "to convenient" to just put stuff there and not ever move it again. With a small table, there physically won't be any room to "just set" stuff!  Hence, I will have more working room!
Reply:Cool...Keep working you'll be fine
Reply:nice job. keep practicing. "Every choice you make will effect at least one other person"
Reply:Now put it on wheels so you dont drag it around
Reply:How come you put the good welds underneath where no one can see them? .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Originally Posted by RodJOUCH!!  That's a damn good looking table.  Add a lower shelf or two, some hooks to hang grinders clamps and stuff, and wheels.  Nice work.

Reply:A table or welding cart is a great project to learn on. I think it's better than just bead on plate, because you end up with something useful at the end of the day. (assuming your welds are at least strong enough to hold the steel together......Good job and if that's your weld after the first day you will have great looking welds soon. Keep at it.
