Multipurpose machines-options

New to the forum. I will be using the search function but wanted to post as well. What machine best suits a hobbyist that will mig, tig, and stick weld that has foot/fingertip controls for the tig. So far it seems Thermal arc has those capabilities. I primarily do work on cars as a hobby. I am inexperienced at welding. I don't really have time for classes, I realize this is the most efficient option as I travel a lot and have two young children so I weld at night when they are sleeping and I am restoring a car.I currently have an old Century 145 mig that work great for me, a Thermal arc 95s to learn to tig, and a Clarke hot shot spool gun that I have been playing with. I would like to get a multipurpose machine for space that will adequately do everything I need for a reasonable price (under $2k all in). I already have my bottles and good Miller hood.Thank you in advance,John
Reply:The newer TA machines are quite nice from what I understand. They have a bit of an edge I think over Millers new Multimatic. In your price range however you could also afford a nice used Miller XMT 304 with feeder and possibly add the tig gear and pedal. That would give you a mig, stick , DC tig rig you would probably never outgrow..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Here you go. Buy this as it is AC/DC, and puts out a good stick arc as well. And have money left over for a stronger mig with spoolgun. $1500http://www.weldersupply.com/productd...&ID=74&pID=776Last edited by shovelon; 11-26-2013 at 11:37 AM.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:I have heard nothing but good about the little thermal arc machines, but I went a different route.I purchased a Miller Multimatic 200. I bought the TIG contractor kit and the Spoolmate 100 kit. Most of my work has been Mig welding aluminum and some stick repairs on my backhoe. It is a great machine and works well on 110 or 220V single phase. It is mostly American also, which was important to me. The machine with all the above is a little expensive though.
