Yesterday, SWMBO and I went to the auction house that is liquidating her sister's stuff. An item 'in the catalog' was a 2002 Chevy Blazer with only 69,000 miles on it. Being always interested in cars and trucks, I went over and checked it out. A quick look in the engine bay clearly told me it was an inline 6. I didn't think any of the 'big 3' was making them since they ironed out most of the issues with the V6 format.Anybody know anything other than:- They were built from 2002 to 2012- 4.2L Displacement.- At least 3 recalls (stickers under the hood).It goes up for bit at 6:00 tonight in Pine Bush.edit: Halp! Reply:Yep good ole straight six in those. I unfortunately can't tell you much about them though. If that surprised you, have you looked under the hood of a goat truck? You might be in for another surprise

Reply:All the inline engines have an advantage over the v's in that they have a longer stroke resulting in more available torque. My '07 Colorado has the inline 5 and is pretty strong on torque. Reply:The 4.2 is solid.BMW uses a I6 with a very similar design, 4x4 or all wheel drive axle goes through the oil pan. Gets the differential higher up for an over all lower ride height 4x4...basically so the truck will drive more like a car.4.2 vs the BMW I6..the 4.2 is less likely to blow a head gasket, the BMW is slanted similar to a Dodge slant 6 and the intake and exhaust are on opposite sides from the gm 4.2 and the BMW 2.5,2.8,3.0 and probably a few more sizesThe 4.2 gm has had a couple recalls but if I remember correctly it was mainly ECM program edits.It'll need a transmission or 2 before it needs any internal engine repair as long as you don't run it hot and service it regularly
