Is propylene glycol based antifreeze better than ethylene glycol based antifreeze in tig coolers with aluminum in the system?I can't see paying $30 for a gallon of Miller coolant that's already 50/50 diluted. It can't be a magical formula. Thanks.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I been using propylene based for years with no problems. This can open up a can of worms with many responses.I use it because it is more friendly than glycol but that is a personal choice.Think about the thousands of old Datsun's and Toyota's with aluminum heads through the years with no troubles with green anti freeze.Mine is Sierra MSDS here http://www.sierraantifreeze.com/tech.htmlThats my 2¢V

Reply:Just change out the PG antifreeze more often. I understand that the decomposition product can be somewhat acidic, and that's not great."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

I've bought pallets of coolers out of factories doing water cooled MIG in robot cells where they were running antifreeze in them. Binges, Bernard's, Millers, even some no name contract made jobs.A great deal of them were trashed. Procon pumps, even off the net get pricey when you factor in the bottom line. Not to mention, that crap really makes a mess. Been my estimation from that experience that I'll just stick to OEM rec'd specs. Miller won't back factory warranty if you use it in a new one either.I just make it simple to people who buy coolers from me.If the pump fails, they send it back & when i take it off green coolant runs out of it, my warranty is void.IMHO of course.

Reply:Well here is the MSDS sheet:http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/msds/Coolant043810.pdfSo the stock coolant is pure ethylene glycol and distilled water. So why is it $30 a gallon?Last edited by Drf255; 09-23-2012 at 07:26 AM.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:So $37 a gallon or $140 for 5 gallons. http://www.cqconcepts.com/chem_ethyleneglycol.phpTA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum

retty obvious that someone hasn't learned to use the SEARCH feature.MANY articles about the "proper" coolant to use in tig coolers.Oh, and just for the record, automotive antifreeze IS NOT recommended.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.

Reply:I believe that automotive antifreeze has other additives. I checked the web for the MSDS on a few, and it appears that Toyota's is the closest to 95% EG and 5% diethylene glycol. The others all list some percentage of salts. These must be the silicates that people talk about clogging up torches, I believe they're supposed to be leak inhibitors. So we commented and did some research and someone else can look this up someday. What a nightmare huh?So at least to me, it looks like Toyote antifreeze and distilled water will approximate the $30 per gallon Miller coolant.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
