I am fairly new to TIG ..I bought a used Miller Syncrowave 250 . It came with a cooler. All the info I can gleen from it is it has a Procon pump, it came from a factory setting and maybe a in house build unit.... It works fine ,, I am in upstate NY and am just a homeowner without a heated shop..I know this will freeze if left out...    Please answer a few "Q" ..  What coolant should I be using for summer and winter welding ?  I see a lot of bad on using regular auto anti freeze due to sealants within the product. Miller has coolant for 30 bones a gal. Any help will be appreciated Thanksaltec
Reply:Straight Glycol or  Ethalyne Glycol should work year round. Be careful as it doesnt have a dye in it and looks just like water. It will keep your water from freezing and I beleive it lowers the boiling point of water and aids in cooling. I used it for LASERs with water cooling jackets and never had a problem like over heating ,freezing or algae.  I dont have water cooled torch yet but plan to make a chiller as a project to reduce electrolosys/galvanic reaction in a chiller. Then I will get a water cooled torch.Last edited by Insaneride; 09-18-2012 at 09:35 AM.Reason: freezing
Reply:We use Dynaflux Defense, the DDF929 concentrate, mixed with distilled water.  $19. bucks a gallon.  Dynaflux does make TIG coolers.  I think this is where we got it:http://weldingdirect.com/coolpumlubfo.html"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Your probably better off with Oldendum's advice as I dont know if Glycol has coagulants that could be detrimental to your torch.  But $19.95 per gallon?  Im only paying $4.39 for a gallon of diesel. That will probably change after the election but then Dynaflux will probably also increase as a result of fuel prices. I dunno, but tommorow is gonna be a better day and if it isnt, I will worry then or not.
Reply:Thanks to all:: That Defence 929 is now $69 ... I would need to use it stright here as temp goes mighty low ..........http://stores.ae-welding-industrial....ter/Detail.bok

Reply:No, that $69. price is for a case of four 1-gallon jugs.  My link clearly shows $18.98 for one gallon."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Never stuck a jug in a snow bank to verify.50/50 mix with water will protect from freezing down to -34 deg. F. 60/40 down to -62 deg. F. 70/30 down to -84 deg. F. If you're out there welding in that......... you're a better man than this freeze baby.
Reply:It also appears that Toyota coolant is nearly pure glycol, unlike the other brands.  The one listed by Oldendum looks like a steal.I wonder what shipping will be.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
