On a hyperthem plasma, when done cutting, the air stays on for 10-15 seconds and then auto cuts off.  I assume it's to keep the tip cool.  When I'm cutting though, I've found myself automatically pulling the trigger again after a cut to stop the air so I'm ready for the next cut which I might start 2-3 seconds later after I reposition.  When your not even close to using the duty cycle, is this an issue with consumable life or torch life?
Reply:I'm pretty sure Jim has mentioned that doing this will shorten the life of the consumables, but I can't remember which thread he said that in. I'll move this to the Hypertherm area so he sees this easier and can comment on it again..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:If the torch and consumables are not cooling properly it will not only shorten the life of the torch and consumables but will shorten the duty cycle due to build up of heat in the torch. While your cutting there is air flowing to not only make the plasma arc but keeps the torch and consumables cooler. When you stop cutting the heat will build up very fast and will start taking its toll on thing like springs, orings, wires, plungers, etc. as the heat has no were to go but be sucked up by everything in the torch. The post flow was put there for a reason, by bye passing it your not really helping anything as you can move and get reset then just pull the trigger and start you next cut.No post flow has killed a lot of plasma cutters and torch's in the past before they started adding it to the units.www.georgesplasmacuttershop.comPlasma Cutter and Welder Sales and Repairs--Ebay storeTec.Mo. Reply:Hypertherm is the leader in plasma cutter consumable life. If they have post flow for set for 10-15 sec then it needs it for the full 10-15sec. I don't think there would be a problem with double tapping the trigger when you're ready to cut again as the air would come right back on to strike the arc.My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:I don't recommend double tapping the trigger to shut off the air post flow. The duty cycle ratings are for the power supply.....with the torch the consumables get up to full temperature (around 3000 F on the hafnium electrode emitter) in a few miliseconds. The airflow is directed to pull the heat out of the copper body of the electrode and away from the nozzle orifice (there is no part called a tip on a Hypertherm). If this is not done...the heat is absorbed through the torch inner components, and over time this can and will affect the life of the torch body by breaking down the critical electrical insulation between the negative and positive sides of the circuit. Further, you will experience much more rapid electrode wear and nozzle orifice wear if the post flow is not allowed. The added consumable wear and shorter torch life is far more expensive than the air flow that is used during post flow.During steady state cutting.....air is flowing, so the torch cools just fine while the arc is on, however there is residual heat that needs to be removed after the arc extinguishes. Keep in mind that all Hypertherm Powermax units refire immediately by triggering the torch during postflow.Jim Colt  Hypertherm
