Oxy-Fuel Welding help?

In class yesterday we were oxy-fuel welding with RG40 mild steel filler. We were welding a t-joint fillet weld and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I asked our instructor what I was doing wrong and showed him my "weld" and he just said to start a puddle and give it more heat and less heat. Ok...So I tried several times over 4 hours and every one looked horrible. When I started a puddle on the bottle plate of steel and try to flow it into the joint it would just run along the joint but never actually flow into it. The steel we were using was sand blasted and clean. After I start my puddle should I melt the filler with the flame and drop it into the puddle or just dab it in? When I just tried dabbing it in the filler metal didn't seem to melt into the puddle hardly at all. Does anyone have any advice? I have a mid-term next week and we are doing this same thing for that. Thanks for reading all this if you do.Last edited by DSW; 06-07-2014 at 02:52 PM.Reason: removed spam link
Reply:Steel won't flow into a joint by heating one piece. Both pieces need to puddle, then the puddles will mix together. As far as the filler, when the puddles(both) appear, introduce the Filler into the puddles which is where the heat of the flame cone should be pointing.Give it a second or two, then the filler should melt into the puddles becoming one. This is the way I do it Tig or Oxy-Acet, so I maybe wrong?????
Reply:I did a lot of O/A welding 15 years ago. I have never used a tig but from what I read and watch the 2 processes sound almost identical as far as working the puddle and adding filler. The biggest difference between the 2 being tig can't explode your puddle 20 feet into the air if you over heat the puddle and with an oxidizing flame.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I've done it 44 years. I find it much easier than TIG. Arc length is no where near as fussy, you never dip a tungsten. In a T joint focus the tip of your white cone in the center of your joint until things are wet, offer filler. The puddle must be formed in base metal before filler is added.
Reply:This is one of those "hidden link" threads I commented on the other day. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...w-spam-attacksLooks like it's a direct copy past from a Yahoo Answers post that some one answered 5 years ago. His 2nd post was a poorly written post with another spam link. I'm sure he's a spammer and he's going bye bye in a bit.https://answers.yahoo.com/question/i...9075327AAa2gCo.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
