Well I purchased a Smith Medium Duty dual guard off of ebay and I have been patiently waiting for it to arrive (yeah right).  Well I get home today to find a large box on my porch so of course I tear into it.  The toolbox has the cardboard wrapper stating medium duty toolbox outfit blah blah blah.  Now to the issues.#1 I have actually received a heavy duty outfit as the torch handle is a wh200 not 100 and all my tips are heavy duty versions.  Now this is actually not that big of a deal as I suspected as much when the auction description stated sc version cutting tips which are for the heavy duty.  I figured if it was a wh200 I could always trade to the medium or just keep it and get a wh100 handle.#2 The big one.  The actual torch handle has some rather significant dents in it..  Not little nicks (well it has some of those too) but actually dented in several places.  Towards the base it actually looks like someone put it in a vise to hold and gave it a little bit of an over tightening.  Now it isn't crushed by any means but it does make me apprehensive as to whether or not safety/function of the torch is compromised.Anyone have any experience with a dented handle on a torch?  I'll post up pics in a bit as I'm uncertain where the wife has stashed the camera for the moment. Thanks!~Matthew

Reply:The beat up torch handle does not sound good.  Flash back preventers on the handle might help, but mixing of gases inside the handle could lead to a nasty fire.  I would not trust this equipment.  I had an older purox torch that looked o.k. but I experienced a nasty little fire inside the handle within seconds of firing up the torch.   Best, Ralph.
Reply:Found it.  Getting good angles is kind of difficult but I think it shows fairly well. Attached Images

Reply:I would use it. Smith does not mix the gasses in a chamber in the handle. The gasses are mixed in the tip. Being a Dual Guard, means that it has a built in flashback arrestor in the head. No need to add others unless you put them by the regs. I do. If you're not sure, send it to Smith to be checked out. They have a lifetime warranty. Make sure you send it in with a Smith brand tip. Any other brand will void your warranty."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I just noticed that for some reason I posted this in the sale forum.  Can a mod please move it to the oxy/fuel welding area.  Thanks!
Reply:grnsouth,I agree with using the torch.  You should be fine.Be aware though, with the 200 handle and that rosebud (shown in photo), you better have a really large acetylene bottle to feed it.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Yeah I plan on swapping everything but welding to propane.  I would really like to trade down handles to a wh100 but I'm not sure I would feel ok with that with the handle condition.  Trying to get a refund and waiting for a medium kit might be my best option.

Reply:I bet the marks are from some moron overtightening a welding tip nut with a wrench, then gripping the body with whatever was handy while unscrewing the tip later on. "Oooh! Why da tube squashy?" Some folks don't get the "tighten finger tight with the tip back-clocked from final position, then grasp tip and nut together as you rotate them into place without a wrench" sequence and think they are socking down torque-to-yield cylinder head bolts. The dents are shallow enough not to impinge on the tubes beneath them. If it were mine I'd use it.Last edited by farmall; 03-03-2011 at 01:33 PM.

Reply:I have it on good authority that Smith torches are polished in a Wheelabrator full of  live (at the beginning) kittens. Oxweld torches are then Extrude-honed internally with the resulting kitten slurry.  The only ethical thing to do is divest yourself of these products of kitten-carnage.

Reply:I didn't mean to knock your purchase.  No harm meant.I have a few of the Victor ST2600's that I love.  They are so well balanced they are a joy to cut with (I never use combo torches for straight line cutting).  I caution my guys that if I catch them using the torch to knock slag off the steel, I'll wrap the torch around their heads.
