I have tried to spool gun some plumbing before and it seemed pretty hard to get it to seal most of the time with out having to do multiple passes in some areas and it ends up looking pretty bad, our spool gun set up is really inconsistent and welds like crap,  we are sending this job to a welding shop.I have welded quite a bit of aluminum with nice machines where I use to work before and got pretty good but there was never any plumbing type work that we did.My question is...... would most weld shops tig or spool gun something like this. I am wondering because I am wondering if it would be worth it to get a nice spool gun set up, I have a tig machine at home and have been getting pretty decent at tiging but it seems like tiging this type of job would take for ever and I wont take my tig machine to our shop, one of the reasons our spool gun is screwed is because inexperienced people at my work get pissed off when they try to weld aluminum and they have pretty much destroyed the spool gun, one guy actually threw the gun and bent the barrel (it's freeking crazy the things people do)So..... back to the main question, would most weld shops tig or spool gun something like this.ThanksLast edited by schermd; 10-30-2014 at 11:13 PM.Invertig 201 Plasma cutter
Reply:Edit for above post, I am not the most experienced person so I guess I should of said impatient people at my work have destroyed the spool gun.Invertig 201 Plasma cutter
Reply:I'd tig it, but I like to tig over any process when possible.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Tig is by far the slowest method. Usually production of any kind is done by other process (usually wire fed, be it spoolgun or push-pull system if we are talking aluminum).

Reply:It depends on the job really, 99% of the time though I go for my push pull gun.  TIG does a nice job but very few people want to pay for the time it takes.  When I was going to school for TIG welding, the school instructor was also a person who did certifications, he had two guys show up while I was there with a welding rig and both of them certified 6G on aluminum pipe using spool guns.
Reply:You really need to have some good skill with using Spoolgun as it's a much different animal from regular MIG.   Esp if you need pressure or water tight weldsAlso this is where the quality and level of machine play a big part.  Aluminum with a Miller 350p is amazing compared to other machines I have owned/used.Last edited by soutthpaw; 10-31-2014 at 04:01 PM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I would use a push pull MIG for sure if there is a large quantity, and the material is fairly thick, but not too thick or else you are going to have to prep the pipe. To setup for welding something like that with a push pull MIG, you are going to need to do a test piece, or maybe six test pieces. Better put you should do a few test pieces no matter what, especially if you are tying into existing piping, you may only get one shot at the tie in. That is not where you want to find out what is wrong, on weld one.If it was really clean material, and the level of quality was high, I would DC TIG weld it. You can butt weld quarter inch material together as fast as you can AC butt weld 1/8" material. I add a little helium to the mix when I DC weld aluminum. It is a very high rate of travel type of weld. You just have to preheat, stay and warm it up, before you start to travel.                       Sincerely,                            William McCormick
