It has been on Allentown, PA Craigslist for awhile.  Was $225., now asking $180.  Original ad said he got it in an auction, maybe it was 1979 model.  http://allentown.craigslist.org/tls/4113934609.html"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I have what might be the oldest Dialarc 250 in existence.  The serial number is one higher than the starting number in the oldest 1974 Dialarc manual.  Anyone notice that just recently, if you search Miller manuals without a serial number, it will give you a list of all manual versions with starting serial numbers?  What a great improvement!  I only tried it with 330 ab/P and Dialarc 250's."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Well, we shot down to Jersey to pick up my friend's new (new to him, anyway) 2004 6.0 Powerstroke Excursion.  Yeah, yeah, 6-liter, hunk of crap, I know the reputation... it has 120K on it, and I checked all the trouble spots, especially the engine coolant vs oil temps, and it all checks out.  Still though, we're going to go through all the bulletproofing modifications (minus the head bolts/gaskets since I don't believe this thing has had the trouble), and he should have quite the nice towing rig for his 4-legged ungrateful beasts (he and the wife/kid trail ride).  Probably going to change out the coolant/oil cooler next week, Caterpillar EC-1 flush, and FPR screen/spring upgrade to prevent low fuel pressure damage to the injectors.  As funds allow, a decent EGR removal kit will go in, along with ECM flash and a good tuner for towing, economy, and extra arse.Aaaaanyway, we stopped in to Bethlehem, Kelly was the seller, helluva nice guy.  If I weren't pressed for time I probably would have stayed and drank a few beers with him in the garage and finished watching the Pats/Saints game.  Welder looks pretty damned good... I didn't get to try it out because the auction house monkeys or the possessor before the auction house cut the power cable off.  The panels are in great shape except for the peeled paint and rust... very few dents though.  I'm going to swing over to Haun tonight and grab some Tweco lugs for her so I'm not robbing my Trailblazer, and a decent length of cord.  I'm not sure If I want to wire in a short cord with a twist-and-lock, or a longer cord with the standard 3-conductor 50A NEMA 2-pole with ground plug. It's going to get a workout tomorrow at work.  They've put the kibosh on engine driven units because the boat shrink wrap went up over all the massive glass walls that made the place an open-air structure.... and I don't feel like dragging 300 foot of lead around and/or leaving my machine where the Lull lifts can run over it.  They already smashed up one outfit's rental unit (oops).Pics to come tonight or tomorrow.  What kind of cord/plug do ya'll think I should run?  I have the old style slanted-spade dryer plug on a 50A circuit in the garage... been meaning to change that out to a welder plug.  I was thinking a twist-and-lock would be nice, and then have a couple different adapter cords.
Reply:If it isn't going to be a portable rig...and it's mighty hard to fit a Dialarc into that category...just hard wire it in to the circuit.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:Glad to hear it.  That thing need a lot of Amps if you want to run it full-tilt.  Download a manual for that serial number at Miller and have a look at the specs.  50 Amps in should be OK for 1/8" rods.  Above that, hardwire it.Last edited by Oldendum; 10-14-2013 at 04:31 PM."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:I'm the noob here, but if it was me I'd put a NEMA 6-50 plug on it to maintain compatibility with other Miller products. But then again, maybe you need NEMA 14-50 for the outlets where you're using it? Hardwire doesn't sound like a viable option if you're wanting to use it portable.

Reply:The way he described the project, I inferred a multi-story building and getting moved around frequently, but with equipment to effect the move and no shortage of AC power. dangfino.

Reply:Unfortunately I haven't fired it up yet.  I got a new 15 foot 6/3 cable for it and kellums grip, new crimp eye connectors, new Tweco lugs, and was going to back the truck up to the garage to test it out... and threw my back out yesterday.I might be out of work this week.  Bloody hell.Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk

Reply:Well, the old Dialarc 250 I got is the first and last welder I will ever throw my back out on.  Just tugging it from the front of the pickup bed to the back, me on one side and my boy on the other, with a pipe stuck through the lifting hook.  I guess I bent over or twisted.  ZAP.  We got it hooked to the engine hoist and off into the garage.  Then I took a shower and went to the hospital.  I never knew how bad a back spasm could be.  For weeks!  Two 125 pound guys can't manhandle a 365 pound welder.  Incidentally, I'm not a welder, my boy is.  He doesn't want to give up the Dialarc.  You got a great price on a good unit.  Hope it works forever."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder

Reply:I lost the job last week because 1) I finished up all the stainless duct line that they needed done, and 2) I was the most expensive guy they had on the crew... everyone else was working for slave wages from Tradesmen Intl... what a sh1t show.  Hurting my back gave them the out they needed.I guess my only option is to ride some unenjoyment until my back heals up and I can get back to the oil patch, because I'm starting to think there's no such thing as a good-paying shop welding job.  I'll see if I can find some compressor tie-ins instead of the grinding pace of a pipeline firing line.So far as unloading that beast from the truck... I went all the way out to my dad's place with the car hauler and trailered his Kubota back to my place with the fork attachments on the bucket.
