http://m.grainger.com/mobile/product...tle-Disc-6RX96For anyone using these bristle discs in 4.5" diameter, side wheel grinder, what grit do you find works best and lasts longer for removing rust and mill scale on, what I guess is, A36 carbon steel, like square tubing and angle iron. Thanks for any replies or suggestions.TxDoc's Photos Lincoln SP175 PlusLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln 250 LX Spool Gun Lincoln Precision Tig 225 Hypertherm 600 KMG 2x72 Belt GrinderBaldor 812RE Grinder
Reply:For removing mill scale I would go with the coarsest one. Not a big fan of bristle discs myself. They leave an ugly finish and they don't seem to last very long. I generally use the Norton Rapid-strip discs or a good ceramic flap disc.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Coarsest is not always the best removal. The best thing to do is contact the manufacturer and explain what you want.

Reply:Unless you need the "side loading" action that wil supply on a bench grinder (what I conclude from "side wheel grinder) I would suggest a flap disc. For the most part, they work excellent. Since you will be holding the piece, and not the grinder, I dont know howwell that cup brush will work. If this is for a 4.5 handheld angle grinder, it should be ok, but for rust I'd still use a flap wheel or those thick scouring pad units.
Reply:Yeah, a 4-1/2" angle grinder.  I guess "side wheel" grinder is old-old school.I have always used flap discs, but thought these new products might be the new sliced bread. Maybe they aren't.Thanks for the replies.TxDoc's Photos Lincoln SP175 PlusLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln 250 LX Spool Gun Lincoln Precision Tig 225 Hypertherm 600 KMG 2x72 Belt GrinderBaldor 812RE Grinder
Reply:Anyone have experience with these? I saw Jody use one in a video and it looks like it did an outstanding job cleaning the steel/scale without actually eating into the material. But how long do they last? He mentions avoiding edges so you don't schear bristles off but if you are careful do you get a lot out of them? $25 each is real steep when I pay $4 for a decent flap disc at that harbor place.www.FirehouseFabricators.comZachLincoln 210mpLincoln SW200Hypertherm Powermax 45xp2x4 CNC Plasma Table.

Reply:I've used the green ones (can't remember grit) to go back after 60 grit flap wheel to remove the scratches.  They last surprisingly long if not abused.

Reply:The few I bought were dirt cheap from an industrial salvage place, they were a little dirty but unused. They leave a nice level surface instead of the uneven surface that a flap disc leaves.  I use them when I need that perfect finish for high end projects.  I don't see them being cost effective for some projects.   I'll try and get some pics of the difference in finishes sometime this week so you can judge for yourself.
