Gents--I have a half A$$ system now that mediocre at best and gets expensive at $25/month.  Any recommendations on a system that's wireless, that I can install, and tie it into the police department call?  My backup is the most expensive system in the world--two German Shepherds. In advance thanks!
Reply:25$ is about the going rate here for it to you could get a video system they have email alerts and etc that you can setup to run off your wifi to notify you via email or something if the system detechs movement and sends you live videoHigh Octane Welding

Reply:Monthly, no...Twice daily, yes.  I have yet to meet an electronic alarm system that delivers companionship and love when I take it out hunting...the love machine is great way to meet the ladies, too!  When a welder tells you to "stick it", what do they really mean?"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." - George Orwell

Reply:In my shop I have three (two inside, one outside) high-definition IP cameras tied to my home network. They have built-in motion sensing and automatically begin uploading images once the motion sensors get activated. Not too expensive either, the brand I use most is Foscam. You can connect them via ethernet or WIFI.

ReplyRecommendations on a shop security system that's not tied to monthly fees?.    Those German Shepherds aren't cheap by any means.    I kinda forgot what normal teeth look like in a German Shepherd.    When Mine was a puppy, he was constantly chewing on pieces of aluminum laying around.    His teeth got worn down.   He also like to lick fresh rust off of welds.    Then he smelled rats or mice in a sa 200, and chewed up 3 wires coming out of the generator, luckily he barely left enough sticking out to splice onto.     The author wasn't kidding when he said his german shepherds are the most expensive security system.     bearston isn't kidding about them being a love machine either, I cant tell you how many times I walk out of a store, and females are waiting by my pick up talking to the dog, and asking if they can pet him.      He got in a fight at the beach on labor day, and the other dog owner wanted me to give them my name.    I can almost raise a kid, for the price of a german shepherd.
Reply:Can you really have your alarm system go directly to the police in your area? That's very unusual. The purpose of an alarm system is to perhaps scare away some less determined intruders but more importantly prevent intruders from staying for a long period of time. Ideally the alarm is triggered and physical security delays and protects your belongings long enough until someone arrives at the scene. That's why response time is important. Your best bet is to contact a local security company. But a real alarm system aint cheap. Also wireless is more expensive than a wired system - if we are talking about an alarm system suitable for commercial buildings. Those all in one-systems that has siren, the keypad and everthing in one unit is more or less worthless. All you need to do is enter the building and just rip it down.
Reply:We have had to have a security company put a system In our shop, barn and detached garage.   The shop has had the door kicked  several times but after the alarm system(was installed with inside and outside very loud sirens ) They only tear up the steel door and then run off when the siren goes off.  Always a pain in the tail to repair.  Our door looks bad.  However the thug that has been caught several times on our farm is in prison for a while.  I am dreading when he gets out. One of the other guys that broke into our detached garage was beaten, tortured , burned and killed by some of his buddies , so I don't have to worry about him any more.   We live in a small town in a rural area  and have had our home broken into , our detached garage ,our barn and our shop broken into .   We have alarms that are monitored and the service dispatches the police when something is wrong.  We set the alarm off the other night our self .  The alarm company called the police  and they sent out a new patrolman .  When I went to the back door after we had turned out our lights to go to bed and opened it I nearly got shot. The patrolman and I both were kinda scared when I opened the door in the dark. Thankfully I turned the light on as I  opened the door.     It is sad that we are all faced with this crime wave.  We used to never lock our door in this community.

Reply:We went with a Simon XT for the house. You can monitor yourself or have a company such as alarm.com monitor for around $10 a month. It supports a variety of interlogix sensors (door/window, glass break, motion, even non-alarming, but alerting trip sensors in woods, driveway, etc..), and has a basic but trustworthy LCD panel interface. It seems that sometimes with the more fancy GUI interfaces also comes with buggy software that hangs, hiccups, and burps from time to time which is NOT what I want in a sec system. I am pretty happy with our system overall. We used to have a more expensive Elk system in the old house that I also installed. For the money spent, I think the Simon XT system isn't half bad.Back it up with DVR cameras and a large dog, and you might be on to something..-Niche
Reply:It's hard to believe any thing with teeth like that could be called a "love machine" unless it was humping your leg. German shepherds  can look so sad when they flash those big brown eyes ,must be what atracks the ladies.
ReplyRecommendations on a shop security system that's not tied to monthly fees?25???I pay twice that every month in Southern California for a monitored system.http://all-a-cart.comWelding Cart Kits and accessories
Reply:If you put an alarm in, don't just do doors and windows, have motion detectors too.If you only covers doors and windows, they will go through the wall or roof. There are also huge pepper spray cannisters that hose the room full, not nice if you have a false alarm but it's a good deterrent.
Reply:Gentlemen--many thanks for taking the time to offer your suggestions. I certainly agree about German Shepherds here a shot of my two hoodlums.    Nichfab--thank you for the Simon XT recommendation, I believe this is what I'm look for and will be much better than my current system. 12345678910--thanks for the tips, all good stuff that everyone should read. Thank you.
Reply:You can have anyone monitor your alarm system once your contract expires, and there are some companies out there that will monitor it for $10 or less as mentioned. Unfortunately where I live monitoring is not so important because the police take so long to respond if they respond at all, not to mention the several minutes of delay there is going to be while the monitoring company does it's stuff like attempting to call the owner first etc. One thing I consider is REALLY LOUD SIRENS inside and outside, so loud they hurt. Mine are so loud they would cause hearing damage, I have two hidden in the attic behind the gable vents and one inside the house, everything is on battery backup.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:http://simplisafe.com, monitoring for $15/month.  Don't own one, only heard about it.How about some booby traps, like a bucket of paint balanced on top of a door, etc.?  Watch "Home Alone" for more ideas, LOL. Who is John Galt?
Reply:I just use trail cams. Apparently crack heads notice them because I know they were coming around. Finding strange tire tracks, foot prints, stuff was obviously messed with. Then the cams went up and occasionally I see a strange tire track and that's it. I guess when they pull up or walk by that's about the time they see the trail cams and keep moving.old Miller spectrum 625 Lincoln SP-135 T, CO2+0.025 wireMiller model 250 and WP-18V torchCraftsman 100amp AC/DC and WP-17V torchCentury 115-004 HF arc stabilizerHome made 4 transformer spot welderHome made alternator welder
Reply:I had cameras which were connected to the internet and would alert me if i had any movement after a set time, i could view the whole workshop from my PC and mobile, I would be careful about alarms which dial up the Police, I think on average you get a few false alarms and the police will charge you for coming out all the time (in the UK they will after the 3rd false alarm)Buy all means have an alarm with the loudest siren you can get outside and inside the building, but the ability to see your shop even when your not there is a definite bonusIt will cost a little up front, but i would recommend going to homesecuritystore......com and getting a DIY kit. I have a very nice system with a texting feature so that when/if alarms go off i get an instant text from the system (you just buy a pre-paid SIM card for the system). You can add whatever alarms you want and tie them into your system: flooding, fire, smoke, motion, temperature... the list goes on and on... I spent a little over 200$ on mine and its better than some of my buddies who have spent well over a thousand and they pay monthly fees.... Only limitation is mine wont call the cops (unless you set it up to text a LEO buddies cell phone). But it does text me and text a picture to my cell phone when the motion alarm goes off... Then I can call the cops myself... Better in my opinion..Precision TIG 225MillerMatic 250Powermax 35XPPowermax 65TM 4X4 w/ water tableLagun FTV1Monarch 10EEJD2 M3 with hydro conversion
