Hi Guysearlier i had a job of drilling some holes (Quite alot to tell the truth)   in a beam to match some splice plates which were done previously. Now i wanted some transfer punches that would allow me to just offer up the splice plate and punch through the holes but with the holes being 22mm and 24mm i could find any transfer punches that big.So i had the idea of using old blunt mag drill bits and the centre pin which is normally hardened as the dot punch.I had loads of these old Rota-broach bits it made sense to use them. Now i have a full set and they save time in not having to mark up and dot punch every beam, cutting back the risk of errors etc..Take a look Pop the bit and centre pin into the right sized hole.Hit that Pin This is the end result, with the splice plate removed.Start your drilling....Look at that, its got to be the most accurate Hole line up for a splice plate! How about a Section for Time saving/Money Saving ideas and tips that members use throughout their workshops?Last edited by Gerry1964; 10-17-2014 at 03:28 PM.
Reply:Cheap and work well. I beer you.
Reply:Nice. Likely faster than turning a bushing.
Reply:Very Nifty!!I use transfer punches quite a bit sometimes, and they're real good far as it goes. (your available size problem)Then I'll put the piece on the milling machine, and use an annular cutter to drill the hole.My worry has always been that the centering pin on the annular cutter has quite a bit of slop in it.  Well RELATIVELY quite a bit of slop  I'm always worried the setup is a few thou off, which isn't a big deal when drilling a 13/16 hole to accept a 3/4 pin.  But it's a big worry when drilling "perfect" holes to fit exact.  (which is rare I gotta point out).I had to do some thru holes in 4" tubing that exceeded the depth of the annular cutter, so I drilled both sides separately using an index mark on the vise, scribe lines on the tubing, all indexed to the pin on the cutter, and lined it up on the annular cutter pin when drilling each hole.  They were off somewhat, but not too bad.  The error naturally multiplied with the more holes drilled in the same piece, on the same axis.  I really don't like machine work that much."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:What I mean to say  Hard to describe this crap................The entire setup was indexed off the annular cutter pin, and index marks and scribe marks followed for the repeated holes."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Really like your idea Gerry, have also used transfer punches, ironworker punches, have wrapped tape around transfer punches to take out the "slop" when using transfer punches, and have used bushing driver adapters and transfer punches in conjunction with one another to find/provide a "center". Here are a few photos of the last method . Thank you for sharing your method here.aevald
Reply:Great idea. To bad I hadn't thought of it already.   I agree with Sam that they're not perfect transfer punches but they're more than good enough for most work.  I used bushings as above as well though I've not got a set like that (I need, I need, I need, I aaa, Oh sorry got off track there).Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm

Reply:Now i'm liking the idea of the bush transfer punches, Its almost impossible to get a decent set that do large sizes in the UK, So i may stick with my cheaper version for now, it works OK for me and saves all the hassle of marking out everytime.
Reply:Now that got my attention.  Thanks for the Post
Reply:Or use a cnc mill. hahaha. Just kidding. I don't have transfer punches. But what I did have were drill bushings or drill guides. I don't know a lot of the lingo. sorry. But you just laid your pattern on top of your material. put the busing in the pattern, drilled down the middle. pretty sweet. But I can see a limited use.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
Reply:I used a similar idea to start a hole for an easy-out when removing a broken bolt that was recessed. I used to try (often unsuccessfully) to center punch the broken bolt and start with a small bit. Now I start with the biggest drill bit that will fit in the hole until it starts to indent the top of the bolt. Then you have it centered for the bit size that you want to drill for the easy-out.250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
