I have a job where I need to weld some clean channel to the underside of a railroad flat car. Its a bit rusty. Was wondering how well flux core would handle unclean steel. Should I just stick to stick? They are not critical welds, brackets for a water line.
Reply:Fluxcore is very close to stick in dirty conditions , the cleaner you can get it ,the better the weld will be but this is with any type weld. I run only fluxcore in my passport and it welds great.

Reply:I think you'll be quite surprised at how much power that little machine has. It's probably one of the most powerful units for it's size on the market. A huge step up from your current machine even if used on 110v power. Most 140 amp class 110v migs are rated at 20% @ 90 amps. The Passport Plus is rated at 20% @ 110 amps. On 230v power it will stand up to most 180-200 amp class shop machines, other than the lower duty cycle.http://www.millerwelds.com/om/o235825e_mil.pdfPage 11 should have what you want as far as input requirements. Looks like on 230v it will want 3.9 KW roughly at rated output..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
