Reply:Here I areI bought 3 pneumatic scribes from Ebay, one from China, one from India, and one Chicago.First the one from China after monkeying around with it it started to work fine and it will use the Chicago Pneumatic tips but it is loose around the nose.Next the one from India again had to monkey with it to get it to work (longer time spent) it will not use the Chicago tip and their tip will not last.  complete waste of money.I have not yet mounted the Chicago Pneumatic but it is much better made with fit and finish plus it used 1/8" and 1/4" standard pipe fitting for the air connections.  Spend the money and be done with it.When building you CNC scribe mount have it so the tip is right at the metal surface at its max downward movement.  If not the hold down pressure will cause the tip to drag across the metal while the scribe is working.  Also use an air cylinder with a spring return not pressure return less parts to deal with.have funTomDIY CNC Plasma table USB BOB Price THCHypertherm 65Everlast PowerTig 255 EXTMiler 180 Mig13" metal latheMill/ DrillECT, ECT,
Reply:Thanks for the replys...If the pin fits sloppy in the bore of the "nose cone" it will make text lookbad. Must be a snug running fit.  I am asking not for a plasma table, (yes, some day I want to retro my old Linde 'eye-tracer' table to cnc!) but this is a cnc marking machine that uses a smaller scale pneumatic dot-peen marking mechanism. The bronze bushingthat supports the "pin" was worn, and the text looked crooked and awful. I made a new 'tight' fitting bushing, and then the text was crisp and looked good. Problem is, it does not have enough 'oomph' and does not mark deep enough, especially on harder metals like stainless. So....I am thinking of retrofitting one of these units. I do think they are morepowerful, and probably mark a lot deeper. I knew they were being used on the cnc plasma tables, and so I asked the Q here...Any chance for some close up pics of the text from one of the CP units?Would you say the CP and China units both mark at similar depths or is the CP hitting harder? Reply:The striking force should be about the same as that depends on the size of the piston and the air pressure applied.  Internally there is no spring the air moves the piston up and down and the different brands seem to be the same size. The operating pressure is about 90 PSI.Here is a test I ran while first setting up my scribe fine tuning was needed you can see where the scribe first set down (large divot) as I did not have the start delay correct.By no means a great first run before some one beats me over the head about it. Reply:Wow that looks like it goes a lot deeper that what I have currently. I'd say the piston in my setup is about 5/16 dia.
