How do I remove a Rusted on Cap from an Oxygen Tank?

I have a 125CF or so size bottle that I've had for a few years now that I got on CL for about $20.00 and have yet to get the cap off it so I can clean it up and exchange it. Any one ever deal with this problem and over come it? I'd like to exchange it for a different type of gas but can't do nothing until I'm able to get the cap off and wire brush the threads clean.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo. Reply:Bees wax then warm it with a blow dryer or a heat gun to about 150 degrees. Hot enough to let the wax melt into the threads. give it a few raps with a hammer and it should spin off. The wax needs to travel through all the threads so you need to position the bottle so the wax will flow into them.
Reply:We had a old one like that too . I placed it in chain vise tripod , used a 24'' pipe wrench along with a Hilti gun set on hammer . Came off pretty easy. The hammering busted the rust loose .
Reply:Just hammer vigorously on the threaded part of the cap all the way around. That part of the tank is about bullet proof. Those threads aren't real close tolerance and that should break the rust loose. Reply:Thanks guys, I just got it . I was at AirGas last week some time getting O-Rings for the 50mm plug on my mig torch and ordering a new liner for my Spool gun and the guy that was helping " it was a ghost town in there " told me his trick was to just hit it with a hammer all around the bottom of the cup at the bottle and put a pry bar in the slots on the sides.So I tied it to my trailer with a ratchet strap and tried as he suggested but it did not work with out my thinking I'm about to break one of my breaker bars. I was however able to get it to wiggle just a smig and it got the hampster wheel rolling. I ended up getting one of my Belt type Oil Spanner Wrenches that uses 1/2 drive and put my smaller breaker bar on it " could not find my big Bull Dog Breaker Bar " and tapped all around the radius at the threads while turning with the oil spanner wrench and slowly but surely it started to turn until it was free. Yahoo. Reply:Is it safe to use any kind of soapy water solution to clean any part of the valve on the Oxygen tank? Reply:OK so it's not a fluke just an alternative to AC Tig welding that happens to provide a lot of heat for thicker plate. Reply:As far as soapy water, I wouldn't, especially in any area inside the valve. Very low pressure O2 most likely won't cause an issue, but remember it only took a 100% Oxygen environment at 15 psi to doom the Apollo 1 astronauts, as once the fire started, everything burned. It doesn't take much of a contaminant to catch fire as pressures increase. At 1800psi or so even the heat of friction of high flowing gas slamming up against a suddenly closed ball valve is enough to light up even "fire proof" materials like stainless. Soaps usually contain animal fats or petroleum products and are not a good idea.http://applied-inc.com/leak-testing-101-no-soapThey make O2 safe leak test solutions. Snoop is the one I'm most familiar with. There are other brands on the market as well. You can probably find one at most good plumbing supply places, though they may not realize the stuff is O2 safe without looking at the bottle. Reply:Why not let your LWS deal with the stuck cap??? IMHO: I just have a healthy respect for high pressure gasses especially O2 and acetylene. What happens to bees wax on a warm day...Does it become an oil???
