A friend of mine just bought a 17' aluminum canoe. She asked me if I could help her paint it to match her back yard (I'm not making this up). She has sunk a ton of cash into this back yard and this is the final piece of her landscaping. Her plans are to fill it full of dirt and use it for a planter box for her garden. Just so there is a chance that you won't think she isn't totally nuts, her back yard is amazing. I agreed to help her paint it. Here is the information I have.1) The canoe is 17' long and is covered in dents from 20+ years of use. I've sanded the entire boat with 220 Grit and it looks nice and new (except for the dents)2) She whats to paint it a designer red color.3) I don't have a sprayer so I am going to use a paint roller and/or brush. She isn't worried about the final texture, but I still want it to be as nice as I can get it.4) She already has a guy building a base to hold the boat and install a watering and drainage system. I'm only going to be the paint labor guy.My question: What type of paint and primer should I use? I'm looking for gallon sizes that can be mixed to "match her back yard".Thanks for any help!Timmer
Reply:You need a self etching primer for aluminum or the paint will slough off over time. Rustoleum makes one in spray can that works pretty well but I don't know where to find it for brushing or rolling.
Reply:Many videos on youtube showing how to get pro results painting Alum with a roller and brush.Example here:
Reply:Here's a couple yankees "rolling & tipping". Near spray quality without the sprayer.Lots of chemical and prep info googling "how to paint an aluminum boat" from lots of different pro's.
Reply:Really depends on price point on how much she wants to spend on painting a canoe easiest way sand it then have it powder coated red done. If your painting it find a decent paint supplier in your area and talk to them. I'd recommend edura or any decent two part epoxy paint and follow the prep steps for the paint some require sand then acid wash then alodine let dry and then paint and others are sand blow off tack rag then paint.High Octane Welding
