For the longest time when I bought metal I'd end up just strapping it to the top of the cab, and then I finally decided I'd make myself a new headache rack. Then when I started making a headache rack I figured I'd add some rails to the bed, too. Anyways, this is what it looks like at this point today.I still need to figure out what to do for the window cover. I figured two more vertical bars then either flat bar slats or expanded sheet, and I'm unsure if I want to add lights or not. Any suggestions?

Reply:I ended up giving a bit more protection to the corners near the gate, which had obviously taken a beating before. I might add some sort of hanger for a ladder rack extension or something too, not sure yet.

Reply:Rails were bent by cutting slits, bending, welding, then grinding. I don't have me a fancy bender or anything.Oh yeah, all tubing is 11ga, and all rail is 3/16". The corner brackets were from 1/4" scraps.
Reply:I used my Multimatic 200, and it was plugged into 220V. Some welds were better than others, but overall I think it'll hold up.The tubing is 1/8", the bottom angle is 3/16", and the bracket is 1/4". I intentionally went a bit fast in the area near the bolt hole and where I knew the rail would butt into the corner -- to prevent having to grind it out if it gets in the way.

Reply:Something like that might actually be one of my next projects... I would want to leave the pockets open for a rack on the rear of the truck for ladders and such."I thank God for all the freedoms we've got in this country, I cherish even the right to burn the flag, but I'll tell you what, we've also got the right to bear arms and if you burn my flag I'll shoot you"-Johnny Cash

Reply:Great idea on the sliced and welded bends. Gonna use that in the future!

Reply:I wouldn't cover the rear window if I didn't have to. I have a hard enough time not backing over everything as it is without an obscured back glass. But that's just my opinion.
Reply:I finally got around to painting this thing. I used Al's truck bed liner, rolling it on with a 3"x1/4" nap roller. I did 3 coats of the liner, but when it fully cured I didn't like how glossy the finish was so I put on another coat with a 3/4 addition of their flattener, which not only gives a more matte finish but also acts as a hardener and gives a gritty texture. I really like the final texture, as it has a good amount of grip without being overly abrasive. I'm hoping that sometime this year I can get around to spraying the liner in the bed, as well as making bumpers with the same finish. And of course painting the rest of the truck is on my "really want to do but will probably never find the time" list.

Reply:I made this bike attachment for the rack yesterday. Slides over the rails and clamps on with a single bolt at the bottom.
