Kind of an odd question, but short of any obvious damage, do flash arrestors go bad?  I picked up a couple sets in a package deal of stuff, and while physically they look OK, they are clearly not new.  Any reason to avoid using them?

Reply:Was it fairly obvious by looking at them?
Reply:Yeah, they had a somewhat wet black soot in them.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Esab 161lts miniarc.
Reply:Aren't they basically a brass foam filling? I'd say short of plugging or being mechanically damaged they shouldn't go bad
Reply:According to the manufacturers they should be replaced every 5 years.   At least thats the way it was the last time I looked into it. With that said I have not done that with my personal ones. When I was a supervisor for a large construction company I did it every 5 years.
Reply:Here are a few pics...
Reply:they are cheap enough to replace for what they may save you from, why temp fate, buy a new set..heres hobarts for a reasonable price less than $8.00 a year if you replace every 5...   https://www.amazon.com/Hobart-770506...hback+arrestor
Reply:I've had them fail in the past, wouldn't allow any gas to pass through. It's not real common but it can happen.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I just run at the regulators.50 feet of acet hose exploding is kinda neat.I like a light handle. Nothing there. These are 12 or so years old. They don't get hot way over there...probably why they stay mint.Last edited by Bonzoo; 09-14-2018 at 07:13 PM.
Reply:It generally begins with the flashback preventers hanging around with dusty regulators in a dark corner of the shop. Then you catch them rolling their own Then they get plugged up.Saw one open look at the contents and post seeking suggestions on how to MIG them back together.
