Kid's want to get a new welding helmet for my Christmas gift:

My kid's want and are asking for vendor, page, and part number for my Christmas gift this year which is to be a new welding helmet. I read good reviews on both the high end Miller, and Lincoln helmets. My older Sellstrom is really starting to eat batteries and I'm getting flashed much more than I used to so time to replace. I've been dropping hints on this idea most of the year and it appears to have taken hold. My son and daughter want to get the welding helmet, and grandkid's are going to supply a couple of good quality LED lights for my welding skid so seeking input on those too. What is preferred out there and why? I'm not into graphics at all so no appeal as a simple black or silver would be just fine. Local seamstress makes racing suits and is going to install a button snap Nomex cloth type affair to cover my head and neck for outdoor use that will be easily removable. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Both Lincoln and Miller have great reviews. The latest Miller Clear light is awesome. I want one but waiting for a rebate. Hopefully they'll have one in the fall.
Reply:Helmets, walk into the LWS and test drive a few options.  Consider not just LCD quality and response time, how it fits YOUR head is most important or the helmet retires fast.  Also important, which battery the element uses and how easy it is to change batterys. Then there is the cleanability of the element and spatter lenses to consider.Cost of replacement spatter lenses is a consideration too.Stay clear of Nomex!  Nomex only has a fire resistance of seconds, and a lot of people get burned depending on Nomex.  Leather has worked for 100 years in the welding industry.  Those racing suits have a 90 second fire resistance!LED lighting is currently in generation 7 headed for 8 rapidly.  50 & 20 watt LED elements that replace 300 watt quartz tubes in worklights cost under 2 bucks and you can convert a quartz fixture in under half an hour.  Better light temperature too, around 5000 Kelvin.Pull out the eefed up worklights and convert them.  Better yet, teach the grandkids to do the conversion so they will have a skill other than phone handling.
Reply:I recently got the Lincoln Viking 3350. I had a Jackson Boss which was a really nice viewing helmet, and the 3350 is much nicer. The Lincoln also uses flat cover lenses which is niceMiller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:I have a Lincoln 3350 and like it with one exception, It seems a lot heavier than my old Hobart Hood that it replaced. Still go back to the old Hobart until it decides to go black then I break out the Lincoln.Trailblazer 302Hobart Stickmate AC/DCLincoln SP 135 TSmith torchSpoolmatic 30A

Reply:I have a Lincoln 3350 . I only work seasonal about 7 months a year. It eats at least 3 batteries per year in that time. Other than that I like it .  I also have HTP electronic helmet. I have had it for almost 2 years, still on the original battery.  The difference in cost was wide. I think my 3350 was $279, my HTP was $89.  The difference is that the HTP has auto shut off.  On the flip side because it has auto shut off there are times when it might be 10 minutes between welds and it will shut off and I go to make the weld and  it does not work.   Of the 2 draw backs I would pick the auto shut off as the less of 2 evils. I believe the HTP to be as good of a helmet as the 3350 in every other way.Last edited by thegary; 09-14-2018 at 10:49 AM.
Reply:My Lincoln went about a year and a half on the original battery. I keep a spare on hand. The Lincoln has more clarity than any other auto helmet I have used. I had a Jackson and a Hobart previously. The Lincoln is lighter than the Hobart even though it has a larger window and the shell is sturdier then the Jackson. The head gear is more comfortable than either of the othersMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
Reply:My LWS loaned me several hoods to try out last year, including the Viking, Miller digital elite, latest Jackson and one other popular hood whose name escapes me right now. I already owneed an Optrel e684 4C hood.Hands down the Lincoln Viking 4K stood out from the rest. Although I prefer the Optrel’s controls and lightweight, IMO the Lincoln has better clarity.  I ended up buying the Lincoln.I have not had any issues with batteries in either the Lincoln on the Viking.Miller Trailblazer Pro 350DMiller Suitcase MIGMiller Spectrum 2050Miller Syncrowave 250DXLincoln 210MP
