Well... after much tinkering this afternoon... got the ol' Weldanpower 150 to start... Sanded the points, ran a little Marvel Mystery Oil through her... sprayed a little starting fluid and voila .. she runs! ... Changed out the fuel filter and cleaned out the gas tank... put on a new fuel filter... added fuel and now seems like the float is stuck open... no big deal.. picked up a new carb for $20... If I have time tomorrow I will put on new carb... run her and then test the welding side Kell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."

Reply:The guy I bought it from said it has been sitting for  about 5 years in his barn. He got it from a friend that owed him a couple hundred dollars.Any advice on checking the voltage? Or, just set the machine to 120 on the selector and test for matched output at the terminals with a multi meter.Have a great Sunday!Kell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."
Reply:As said check the brushes and slip rings first. The brushes to be sure they free to move in the retainers, the slip rings are free of corrosion. A voltmeter set to AC will tell you the OCV. If it's close to spec it will more than likely weld.MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Reply:So, after the honey do's... got a chance to play with my Weldanpower... put new carb on..few squirts of starter fluid and she come to life! Ran her for a good 10 minutes.. little rough at idle but runs good at full RPM. I have full power output at the 120 and 230V plugs. I also have voltage at the welding lugs. I do need to tinker with the governor a little and  I see that there is some kind of "pull and lock into position" piece .. seems like you are supposed to manually pull it out to get max RPM?.. Still looking for a fuel tank (Kohler k241 10HP engine) .. Looks like an oval shape.Took off the cover to check out the generator side... not too bad... will clean her up a little in there. I cleaned up the contacts for the amperage selector and also the 2 circular rotating pieces where the contactors (brushes) touch. Reply1979 WeldanPower 150... Trying to save!ick up one of these at Home Depot/Lowes/Harbor Freight/Amazon and set the RPM to yield 62-62.5Hz at no-load high idle (weld/power speed). The W&1979 WeldanPower 150... Trying to save! 150 is a 2-pole/3600rpm generator.RPM = (Hz x 120)/# of polesRPM = (60 x 120)/2RPM = 7200/2RPM = 3600For a 4-pole/1800rpm generator, replace the /2 with /4.Setting to 62-62.5Hz allows for 100-150rpm governor droop (not drop) under load to maintain acceptable generator output frequency of 58-63Hz.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Thank you Duane! ..  I will get a Kill A Watt today in my travels.. Would like understand the governor operation a little better... I see where it attaches to the carb. and the spring etc... So, what is the best way to test this? Also, if this is to "govern" the idle, then why have a locking throttle linkage device on the system? I watched a person on Youtube with a W&1979 WeldanPower 150... Trying to save! 150 start it up, idles for a minute, then he pulls on the manual throttle linkage and locks it in full throttle mode...Does the Governor sense a electrical load on the system and then automatically adjust the throttle?Thank you for your insights.. appreciated very much!Kell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."
Reply:This Youtube video? The B&S throttle setup on that one is a little different than that of the Kohler. On the Briggs in the above video, the throttle is pulled out and locked to bring the unit to low idle overriding the governor.  On the Kohler, the throttle is pulled out and locked in place to apply spring tension to the governor lever resulting in the engine speed increasing to weld/power speed.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:To be sure, frequency is what you're setting to.  See the equation above in post #14 to determine RPM based on the output frequency. The W&1979 WeldanPower 150... Trying to save!150 doesn't have a voltage regulator but as many generators do and can compensate for low/high RPM to result in proper output voltage, frequency can still be outside acceptable 58-63Hz range so always set to frequency.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Hi Duane  .. I went ahead tonight and sprayed her down with some de-greaser .... and carefully pressure washed the entire inside of the machine. Spent about 20 minutes with compressed air blowing it out. Now, it is sitting in front of my shop fan for the night. Tomorrow I will build a better gas tank bracket and hopefully get it running. Then I can check the frequency as you suggested. Thanks again for the help / info!Kell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."
Reply:Continued to work on the governor today,.. finally got that fixed... Still fighting the dirty gas tank.. sediment is still clogging the line after running for a few minutes... so, now flushing the tank again. Will see if I can get better results tomorrow with that. Also, working on the high speed issue... Motor is running up to about 4000 RPM... free up the rusted nut on the adjustment tomorrow and get her back down to the 3600 RPM mark.Have a great night!Kell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."

Mine has a adjustment type nut that is on a threaded rod. I guess I assumed wrong that this was what adjusted the throttle (RPM) based on where the adjustment nut was placed. I will have to look into the governor a little closer to understand how it actually works... I know when I pull and lock the throttle open using the threaded rod, the frequency on the 120 output receptacle is way higher than 60 Hz. My thought was that the 60 Hz is directly tied to the engine RPM.? Thank you for your help as always!KellKell in FloridaEverlast Powertig 200Everlast Supercut 51P PlasmaSeveral vintage Idealarc 250 Round TopsMiller Dialarc 250 AC/DC - circa 1976"I don’t care that they stole my idea …  I care that they don’t have any of their own."
Reply:A previous owner obviously had to replace the original "J" throttle control with the threaded rod.  The original control would have had a notch in it that dropped into a keyhole slot in the bracket.  This keyhole was enlarged to accommodate the stop nut on the threaded rod.  With the original throttle control that locked into a set position, high speed is adjusted by shortening/lengthening the linkage at the threaded coupler in the second photo.  With the modified control with threaded rod "J", speed can actually be adjusted by moving the stop nut position OR lock it in place and use the linkage coupler as originally designed.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Also, the original missing throttle control had a maximum travel stop that prevented pulling the throttle out past the high idle "lock-in" position thus preventing over revving the engine.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:While you're messin with the fuel system SCRAP the factory Kohler pump and replace it with a vacuum operated fuel pump.  Those old Kohler pumps perforate the diaphrams and blow up Kohler engines.
Reply:Virgil5, Good afternoon. Does the vacuum fuel pump mount where the old Kohler pump is now? Thank you! Reply:Kell, if you take the old fuel pump off carefully remove the gasket off it and use it for a template to mark the outside and bolt holes on a piece of 10 ga or 3/16" for a cover plate. When you get the pulse fuel pump and find what size vacuum hose you need for the pulse fitting on the pump. Then buy a hose barb that size and it will probably have 1/8" male pipe thread on the other end. Drill and tap a hole in the cover plate to screw the hose barb in. The fuel pump works off the crankcase pulsations to move a diaphragm in the pump to pump gas to the carb. Reply:This is how you properly adjust the Kohler K series governor;http://cubfaq.com/govadjust.htmlOnly after you have adjusted the governor correctly should you adjust the engine rpm. Which, according to the Lincoln Electric specification sheet, should be set at 3700 rpm.  This is done by adjusting the length of the notched pull ring.  Then,  follow Duanes advice and use your Kill a Watt meter to to fine tune your rpm's to get the proper Hz output.Keep the Kohler fuel pump, replace with aftermarket if leaking fuel into the crankcase, check the oil level before start up and you won't blow it up.This is how I cleaned up my fuel tank;https://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.ph...13#post8620713Good luck!
