hi everyone  im a beginner so i was wondering if someone was to purchase a used tig welder what should you look for in a used tig  ?   so you don't get ripped off
Reply:It's a pretty big question really. Some of the items we'll need to know for the discussion:Steel only, or steel and aluminumThickness planned to be weldingHome use or daily "makin money" useMax price$EtcDave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Number 1, make sure it works. Bring someone wth you who knows how to weld and have them weld with the machine for a while. Check that it welds well on AC, DC, and stick. #2, visual inspection to make sure the parts aren't ratted out. If it welds well, and looks clean, and well maintained, it is probably OK. Be very nervous if the seller refuses to let you demo the machine or gives you an excuse about not having leads, a power cable/power source, no foot pedal, etc. Without all the parts, and without a test, offer him 1/3 the normal asking price, just because you are taking a huge risk. Either that or walk away. That's what I did with my Syncrowave and I got lucky. But I learned that lesson the hard way on the first tig welder I bought without testing.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:A major brand/model with a good reputation for reliability and availability of repair parts and service is a starting point.  A machine without accessories or a means to test it is a crap-shoot. A few years ago I bought an old Syncrowave 250 bare bones unit and untested, but somewhat trusted the seller to take it back if need be.  Price was $850. It looked clean and worked fine once we got it hooked up. Now there's an issue with the HF not working, but that shouldn't be a real big deal to fix."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:yea that's what i thought i bought a 26 gal. comp. for $200 &later found out a little more about it but we live n learn so maybe i should go with a new 1 &have peace of mind more cash more safe just would like to know how much to spend like i said im a beginner n just want to weld sheet metal for cars maybe aluminium but not very thick metal  maybe 1 inch at the most i have a mig 10  lincoln &still trying to figure that out maybe i should wait &learn a bit more about migs first it's just cause i love tools .
Reply:If you are going to spend $800 - 1000, a new machine is the way to go. There are many good machines in that price range with accessories, and warranties. It depends on what you want to do with it. Check out some of the welding channels on the internet: Weld.com, weldingtipsandtricks.com, chucke2009 on youtube, there are more channels out there. These sites regularly test and recommend TIG & Combination machines of different brand names and price points.  Just a thought.
Reply:Everyone has their own opinion. But my opinion is different than PSCampSr. I have owned an AHP alpha tig and syncrowave. I think you get much more value for the money going blue or red with a used machine. Warranties don't do much good if you have to pay to ship the machine back or wait forever for it to be fixed, as has happened to more than one person here.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:What's your budget?   You won't find many inverter AC/DC machines cheap used.  Most people think theirs are made of gold.     Also do you have 50 to 100amp 230vac power source? You will need that if buying an older transformer machine.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I would take some lessons first. Then when you find one try it out first. And without warranty make sure it is cheap enough to send it in a month after you buy it for repair. Inverters don't repair well, and if they are not broken people keep them. If I were you, and I am not, I would get trained and buy new with warranty. Then beat the hell out of it.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:yup i think it is the best advice but at 58 where the heck do you go to get lessons from  unless you take a trade which is a full time thing which i don't have time for but yea i would love to take lessons i wish i could find someone ,cause im still trying to figure out my mig 10 &im having probs with that lolol &i would never abuse the machine my mig is almost in new condition i take care of my tools so they last .
