Thinking about replacing my oil bath on my 88 sa200 with a k/n rechargeable one good idea or should I keep the oil bath also what micro fuel filter should I use I work down on the jersey shore so sand is every where
Reply:I wouldnt use a K&N near sand without a pre charger. I wouldnt replace the oil bath original for a K&N either. A K&N would be ok if I couldnt afford the $200 original type. If you need to replace ,  I would check this one. About $200. http://www.weldmart.com/main/repairp...airfilter.html
Reply:The paper element type that Insane linked would be the only alternative to the oil bath I would even consider.  But I wouldn't replace my oil bath period. The K&N type would be right there one notch above an old jersey glove or a dirty grease rag duct taped around the carb if I were hard up."You can't out puke a buzzard"
Reply:What Insaneride and Pipeliner said.The biggest beef with oil baths is the maintenance.  No body likes having to clean them.Unlike a paper element that becomes more effective (passing cleaner air) yet less efficient (becomes more restrictive) as it gets dirtier, an oil bath remains constant in both aspects.  The air can't get any cleaner than after passing thru oil where it gets scrubbed of all dust and debris.  Think about it - a 10 micron paper filter can still pass 10 micron sized particles.The key to an effective oil bath is maintaining proper oil level.  Too low and the air never passes thru the oil where it is cleaned, too high and you run the risk (although very slight) of pulling oil past the separator meshing into the intake.  Even if it did, once the proper level or even near to it was re-established, oil overdraw would cease.But in the end it usually boils down to personal preference.  That is unless an original oil bath wasn't readily available in which case I too would recommend the Reliable Air Filter as the most suitable replacement.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:General maintenance:1) Remove the cup assembly and dump the oil into your favorite waste oil container.2) Remove the inner cup and wash both in parts cleaner (or favorite cleaning fluid).3) Remove the clamp and wash in parts cleaner if needed.4) Fill outer cup with same oil as used in engine or 30W non-detergent as desired to "Oil Fill" line.5) Insert inner cup into outer cup and fill to its "Oil Fill" line.6) Replace clamp if removed in step 3.7) Replace filled cup assembly and tighten clamp.Major maintenance:1) Same as 1-3 above but remove main housing and soak/wash in parts cleaner to clean separator meshing.2) Blow/air dry and reinstall.3) Same as 4-7 above.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Guess I need to go back and re-service the '55 IH tractor we had from 1965 thru 1998 that only ever had an oil bath similar to the SA200.  I obviously made the terrible mistake of only servicing it every time we changed the engine oil and filter.  It only saw a dusty dirt or hay field a couple times in its life. I put a 5th wheel on the frame and sold her off for $8500. Oh, it got a 5" chrome straight pipe too, to replace the rotten muffler and rusty stack.
