Okay on a newly acquired Shorthood I have the r-51 bellows style idler, seems too be working kicks the machine into idle after the motor starts up,How can I test the electrical and test the mercury switch?Dose this setup require a spring too pull it too full throttle like the r-57 dose or dose it just use the governor?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:With the bellows retracted in the low idle position you will see continuity across the mercury switch leads and none in the high idle position if it's good.No spring required as the mechanical force of the bellows extending is sufficient to move the linkage to the high idle position. To set the reaction time you can manually activate the unit as I've demonstrated here:MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Okay now my next question.Where would I get a spring like this or how could I go about making something work?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I pulled that one out of my toolbox "junk drawer" and modified it.  I have no idea where it originally came from at this point. What are you trying to accomplish?MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Yes it is, I don't have the two spare levers like in the pictures aboveSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ReplyR-51 linkage hook up and governor setup.erhaps another member here has the required break-away lever that may have been removed during an electronic idler upgrade to their short hood.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Here is what I'm working with. Now adjusting full load speed you adjust the bottom lever (think it's missing a screwed)Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkLast edited by 78fordf150ranger; 04-06-2016 at 10:58 AM.
Reply:Okay so I when digging and found a spring.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:That homemade looking setup should work and might just need a different spring with more compression capacity (longer).  However, the speed spring lever is missing the upper portion that would have the speed adjusting bolt. That bottom hole is for the max speed limiting adjuster for the chain throttle control and was used on some non-chain short hood applications and is really not needed for rheostat controlled machines that run at a steady weld speed. This photo shows where your missing lever piece should be:Originally equipped with a stop bolt in the lower hole, it was removed after this photo was taken.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Okay so more tension on this spring or a longer spring? Now it will idle up when a arc is struck slowly and very lazy. What type of adjustment can I do? And how can I set the time for it too idle down?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I was thinking longer for more rod travel to prevent coil bind but if it's allowing the governor lever to go all the way to the end of it travel then it's not an issue. The needle valve at the vacuum inlet to the R-51 is how you adjust the high-to-low idle speed.  If the unit goes right to low idle as soon as it starts then the valve is open too far and would explain why it's lazy to release from low idle and could prevent the carburetor lever from going to full open under maximum load.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:And the adjustment is touchy when it's close to where it needs to be at 10-12 seconds delay.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:The upper speed adjustment bolt any idea on size it was? 1/4" fine? I got the bellows set, still kinda lazy but I think the carb needs some attention and a new manifold gasket.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Might have been 1/4-28 but I believe some were/are metric.  If you repair your lever you can make it be either.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:It doesn't overheat.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:No doesn't seem too. Both rad hoses seem too feel the same. So I got the idle down time set. But i think there might be some binding in the linkage. Now when I strike a arc it doesn't idle up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:You can manually release the idler by exposing and pushing down on the plunger as you can see in the video clip I posted above.  That way you can stand right there and see what's going on and make the necessary corrections as needed.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:That's what I was doing then when I go too strike a arc it will not idle up. Is it the Mercury switch that tells the electromagnet too collapse pushing on the air valve, kicking it into high idle? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:Okay so best way too test it? I have another spare r51 that I believed workedSent from my SM-T560NU using Tapatalk
Reply:With the engine running I would open the needle valve and let the bellows collapse to the full low idle position, close the needle valve and see if the bellows holds.  If it does, press the plunger to see if the bellows release to the high idle position. If it doesn't hold, either the bellows has a crack in one of the folds or the release Schrader valve (tire stem valve) is leaking. If the bellows doesn't fully collapse or fully release then you could try the spare.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!Well all that works.it holds and when you hit the plunger it all works.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
