Okay on a newly acquired Shorthood I have the r-51 bellows style idler, seems too be working kicks the machine into idle after the motor starts up,How can I test the electrical and test the mercury switch?Dose this setup require a spring too pull it too full throttle like the r-57 dose or dose it just use the governor?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Reply:That homemade looking setup should work and might just need a different spring with more compression capacity (longer). Reply:I was thinking longer for more rod travel to prevent coil bind but if it's allowing the governor lever to go all the way to the end of it travel then it's not an issue.The needle valve at the vacuum inlet to the R-51 is how you adjust the high-to-low idle speed. Reply:You can manually release the idler by exposing and pushing down on the plunger as you can see in the video clip I posted above. Reply:With the engine running I would open the needle valve and let the bellows collapse to the full low idle position, close the needle valve and see if the bellows holds.
