Okay, really dumb question, but I bought a little wire feed welder from home depot (MIG, with out gas - wire feed arc welder I guess....) and in the instruction booklet it cautions agains using it on a car body - The question is, why? The current would fry the wiring? What am I missing (or not reading correctly)? Thanks.

Reply:Thanks for the heads up.I'm afraid my car is no more modern than 1983, but it's fun to tinker with.I took the front valance off, welded up some holes (metal too thin, me to slow & made 1/2 of them bigger before figuring out how to close them up quickly...), and wanted to do some work on the rear of the car, but got paranoid. This welding stuff is a lot of fun, I'm looking forward to learning more from y'all. Thanks again.
Reply:Mostly the wire welder you are talking about (flux core) will put to much heat to the panels and cause warping. creating more body work than you all ready had. Plug weld any patch panels or pieces you use for body working. Reply:Yeah, I noticed that on the part I welded; since I've got additional smoothing work to do on that piece anyway I wasn't too concerned, but...Dare I ask, what is a plug weld? Thanks.

Reply:As a CNC shop owner and rv repair shop I can tell you the warning they always issue when working on or near electronic of any kind that has a computer device. "Keep away from static electircal charges and welding". The static electric basically zaps you electronics likie a electromaget zaps computethe r.What we do is disconnect onboard computer from the electric system by pulling the plug! And of course making sure that your grounding clamp is as close to the welding area as possible to minimize a static charge from the area to you computer.
