Anti-theft mailbox ideas?

Just looked through the three pages of mailbox threads here.  Some guys are artists, some are getting laughs (and maybe they are artists as well), and some are making unbreakable boxes to stand against drunk drivers or teenage boys with baseball bats. Lots of very clever ideas. But around here the problem is mail thieves. I don't know to what lengths they might go to get mail out of one of the post office approved "secure" boxes, but I figure to make mine out of something stout.  I was thinking of some scrap 3/16" T-1, or maybe stainless, mostly because stainless tends to eat up saw blades. But I can figure that out easily enough.  What I'm after is a good design to keep the thieving dope-addicts from grabbing stuff out of the box, while not making it too much of a hassle for the owner to get his mail.  I'll be making two boxes, or a single duplex box for myself and the immediate neighbor.Have any of you built a mail-secure box that has worked out well? I've never even owned a commercially-made secure box, just the ordinary kind.
Reply:Might want to consider making it liquid proof as well, the @rseholes in the rougher areas here tend to pour a bit of petrol into mail boxes they cant rob and burn them.Mate of mine put some nice little drains that empty back out right about where your feet would be if standing in front of the box......  He figures if they don't notice their wet toes before they drop the match in its hardly his problem
Reply:An 8" x8" length of sq. tubing and  cap both ends, slot for envelopes on a hinged lockable door.
Reply:I'd use the big blue US Mail boxes for a pattern.  An easily accessible tray that drops the mail into a secured box.  It shouldn't bring complaints from the mailman as its just as fast as an approved mailbox.  The lower area can be made as secure as you want it to be.
Reply:Well,Nearly 20 years ago I used to work away from home for weeks at a time, which meant that the mail would fill up in the box or end up at the Post Office for me to retrieve. And once when I returned home after a long job away, the standard mailbox was hit by a car, reportedly by a teenaged driver. So, I decided to kill two proverbial birds with one proverbial stone, so that my mail box would be nearly bullet proof and also have the ability to stockpile the mail for me in a lockable manner.
Reply:I like that mailbox!  How do you have that set in the ground?  Regards Bob
Reply:Well,There's two pieces of channel that extend a few feet out, around six inches under the dirt. And as I recall now, I drove a couple of rebar stakes through the channel, to "stick it" a little better. But it could be knocked over if hit by a car again. I wasn't trying to make it immovable. That way it was quick to install or could be moved to a new location, if desired. I left it there when I moved, though.Last edited by C. Livingstone; 01-02-2016 at 10:03 AM.
Reply:That really is a nice looking functional mailbox!  Great design, love the way it can be filled to the bottom, makes it difficult for a would be thief to reach in,  unless they have 4' arms.
Reply:Interesting,  that box is, way to far back for postal regulations.    If you piss off your mail carrier,  they could refuse to deliver until it's relocated.   Also,  the post size is not to regulation.   If some idiot crashed into it they could definitely sue you for injuries,  etc.   Yes or legal system is F'ed  up.  https://www.usps.com/manage/mailboxes.htmSent from mobile.  Not responsible for TyposLast edited by soutthpaw; 01-02-2016 at 10:27 AM.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:Well,That's where the box opening and the height was before. That seems to be how and where the Post Office likes a box on a rural, two-lane road like that. Interestingly, coming into the town from off of I-70, that mailbox is the first thing that curiously emerges slowly over the horizon while driving on that very road, called Hastings. Most people in that small town, called Brewster-KS, seemed to really dig it somehow, including the mail carriers.Last edited by C. Livingstone; 01-02-2016 at 10:41 AM.

Reply:I like jackdawg's suggestion to make the box drain forward, though I think the smash-and-grab dopers operating around here are unlikely to come back with gasoline, but who knows?  Livingstone's cool-looking, stoutly-built, very high capacity box is also very interesting, but i'm not sure I wouldn't really prefer to have the post office holding my excess mail. I guess I should just ask owners of the secure official boxes what they think of them, and copy the most popular (but make it heavier-duty).  I hate to have to carry yet another key just to get my mail, but that's modern life.  Per Southpaw's advice (and correct assessment of our idiotic legal system), my intention was and is to mount the heavy boxes to a wooden stand supported by two 4X4s, which will break away if hit by a car, but can't be just pushed over and carried off.Last edited by old jupiter; 01-02-2016 at 01:39 PM.
Reply:If the dope heads are as bad as you describe I would just call screw it and get a PO box.

Reply:Hadn't thought of that, good. Have to find a latch that allows for that possibility.I had a P.O. Box for a while, years ago, and if I didn't get into it for three or four days it got crammed with junk mail, and the P.O. started telling me to rent a bigger, more expensive box. I protested that I didn't get much mail, other than all of the shoppers and flyers, and couldn't they just tag the loading side of my box with a note to omit the 3rd class stuff? Nope, can't do it. So I'm not too excited about those P.O. boxes, Pipeliner, though I take your point. Probably like you, what worries me more is that the b@st@rds will jimmy their way into my shop and/or step van and steal all my welding cable and drop cords and tools. About a year ago, when they had hit three or four of the neighbors a couple of blocks up, I saw a car idling in the street with three guys in it, peering through the trees at the back of my shop. I got a plate and a description, and alerted the cops. Then a week later, I saw the car pulled into the side driveway of a really trashy house belonging to an unemployed redneck family I knew slightly. These people always have junk for sale, some of which may be stolen goods, although the cops haven't caught them at it yet. The next day I paid the daddy redneck a friendly visit. He disclaimed knowledge of the car or occupants. Whatever. But I left him a message for them, "if you figure out who they are."  I told him about all the burglaries on my street, and seeing them looking at my shop. I said that I had talked to all the neighbors, and that all of them have guns, and that even the old ladies would be happy to fire some rounds in the direction of suspicious-looking non-resident, "just to give them a sense of the neighborhood sentiment."  I also said that there is generally an excavator or other earthmoving equipment on my grounds which could bury any number of bodies so deep they'd never be found  .  .  .  and finally, that I had alluded to this in conversations with a cop, and that he said, "None of US would be at all unhappy if those guys got "disappeared" so long as we don't hear about it."  So, I concluded, "If you have any suspicions about any of your acquaintances, tell them to stay the bleep off of 543rd Avenue NS."  Nothing further has happened in the year since then.Last edited by old jupiter; 01-03-2016 at 12:16 AM.
Reply:I forgot about all that complication ! I have no mail box. No address. I have a P.O. box in town. I should go look in it one day ! There might be a Christmas card from 2005 or something else cool !

Reply:Originally Posted by THOMASWINNER55A locking mailbox is a very actual issue for me. A few months ago I noticed my mail going missing as things weren't arriving and companies saying the items had been sent. I suspect my neighbour, a former criminal. So getting a locking mailbox is the only right way to go. Having read the reviews from here https://secretstorages.com/best-locking-mailboxes/ , I'm leaning towards Salsbury Industries Victorian Surface Mounted Mailbox. It's classy looking that matches the entire styly of my house
