Weld penetration testing

I've been practicing my MIG welding on different gauges of mild steel and was wondering what others here use when checking for penetration depths. I tried cutting the weld then brushing on battery acid. It somewhat worked. I don't need a gallon of acid for a small patch tests and searching around I don't see any small bottles of etching/testing liquid.Any suggestions? My battery acid test. Attached Images
Reply:First you have to polish the surface so all the saw marks are gone. The smoother the surface the better the result. Then use naval jelly or other rust remover based on phosphoric acid. A bit safer to handle then battery acid.Fronius Transpocket 180Kemppi minarc 150Esab powercut 400

Reply:Thanks! I do have several flap wheels and I'll look for the other products. For rust removal of small items I've been soaking them in vinegar which works well.

Reply:Keep in mind it is also called muriatic acid. Tile cleaning, metal prep., quite a number of uses. Jasco used to make a line of products. The above has been shown to be false/incorrect information. Please ignore the above statement.Last edited by Sandy; 01-19-2020 at 07:02 PM.Reason: Prevent the spread of bad info."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Thanks again for the updates and help. I'll try these suggestions.

Reply:If you're struggling with getting a decent etch, then try pre-heating the metal with a blowtorch. Not proper hot, just 100 degrees C or thereabouts.I do this, and use stainles steel passivating acid (weak nitric, I THINK, possibly combo with phosphoric). works a treat.
