Good day to all people in this forum. Wondered anyone here would be able to tell me whether would be possible to use a mix of propane + air on an Oxy-Acetylene torch (Meco Midget) for general brazing/soldering purposes as i have found other alternatives way too expensive for my budget i had thought in forcing low pressure air thorough the oxigen hose to achieve enough heat? Appreciate in advance for your assistance i bought this torch time ago not fully aware on the fuel/oxigen prices and it's been sitting there for years unpacked. I have already considered the air generator option but was unable to find a cheap one.kindly,Adrian
Reply:air from an air compressor is only providing atmospheric "air" which is primarily nitrogen (78% depending on your altitude) and 20% oxygen so no not going to work, ya can buy a cheap propane torch for soldering but not going to be very precise nor is it going to be hot enough for brazing at least not efficiently
Reply:Most torches made have air propane tips. Primary for soldering. Brazing needs more heat. Oxygen Acetylene I best for brazing.Dave Originally Posted by Adrian3378Good day to all people in this forum. xygen is still relatively cheap. I braze with oxy/propane. larger tanks will be more reasonably priced per volume.
Reply:You can't feed pressurized air to the torch you have there. That's why you must purge air from hose before lighting torch, air will blow the flame out the instant valve is opened. I primarily use oxy-propane for heating and cutting but normally use oxy-acetyl for brazing soldering and fuel welding. I can stick things togeather with propane but not near as well as acety. Soft soldering can be done quite well with propane-air but air is mixed at tip after gas has passed through orfice. I would use the new oxy-acety rig, occasional use isn't going to cost much.Last edited by Jax; 01-27-2020 at 01:12 AM.
Reply:Im not a expert or a professional, just an old farmer. I have used propane/oxygen in my torch for at least 30 years. I use the cutting head and prefluxed rods to braze thin material.Adjust flame accordingly and dont hit the cutting lever by mistake. Try it, it will either work for you or not, but at least you will know. Cho
