Looking for some tool recommendations for doing automotive body work.I know i should get a die cutter, hammer/dolly set and i already have a grinder... i'm mainly looking for recommendations on tools to really help out on the projectsI am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:I've been a auto body and restoration guy for 38+ years. Here are some recommendations. DA sander, 8" bondo hog sander, inline sander, long block....... I can keep going, but it would probably bankrupt you.
Reply:Yeah... tools to play with and bankruptsy go hand in hand ...Just looking for some suggestions on "good tools"... looking for a recommended tool to cut the body of the truck on the truck and maybe some extra neat hand tools.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:Body saw! A body mans favorite! I LOVE my body saw! GOOD hammer and dolly set.small mig welderDie grinderFinally a good corded 4" grinder.12v battery, jumper cables, and a 6013.I only have a facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/pages/VPT/244788508917829
Reply:Just for cutting and grinding metal:  three 4 inch grinders one with grind wheel, one with flap disk and one with cutoff wheel. body saw and battery power sawzall and a plasma cutter. 48 inch bending brake, bead roller, english wheel. Mig and gas welders, of course wrenches and pliers and not to for get various kinds of snips. hammers and dollies of various shapes and that is just the metal working piece. then DA sanders, inline sander, Mud hogg, and lets not talk about spray guns and how many of those of various tip sizes depending on the material one is applying. tools to work bondo with as well as polishers. All took time to aquire. Beater bags and hammers used when making repair panels. I suppose there are other items out in he shop I have not thought of.Sam
Reply:IMO there are two types of body "work" .Modifications ( hotrod-race car off road etc) and accident repair.Accident repair requires a serious heavy wallet and huge list.I fall into the first and not much at that.I wish I enjoyes it but I just dont. I like building and repairing odd tools and ornamental iron work.I'm a wimp. I like to work clean and neat.First you need the very best air system you can steal. Nibbler, hand shear, air saw 2-3 inch ro-lock setup( both straight and right angle), punches, pry bars, every clamp and plier you can find.1/2 or 1/3 and 1/4 sheet electric sanders. Orbital 5-6 inch air or electric "jitterbug" style sander when it starts getting close to paint time..Round Velcro type (hook and loop wording avoids patent Nazis).Back in the day it was all self stick adhesive ???Hammers and dollies. Every used one you can find and some really hard wood to make custom "punches" and dollies yourself (fender flares and stuff) Jonnesway makes a real nice set of hammer-dollies in the style of the old Proto stuff. Fastenal used to have them in the US---dunno. I'm not there.Next up is the heavy money. Bead roller, English wheel, media blasting, finger brake(s), plasma cutter, HF Tig. Maybe Dot will chime in. She bangs a lot of high quality sheet metal which is basically what we're talking here. There's a HAMB message board with tons of autobody hot dogs talking. Its old school(style) rodders that have a lot to offer. Look up videos from Lazze and Jere on YT. Tinman tech---Kent White---is another guy to give you some idea of how the stuff comes to be.
Reply:Just checked a mail acct. Mac has some stuff on special. For hammers and stuff look at Proto too. Often the exact item, but cheaper. It depends.http://resources.mactools.com/flyers...index.html#/8/Last edited by Bonzoo; 05-05-2018 at 09:19 AM.
