As some may have seen, i picked up a shorthood from an old farmer's son. After driving 2 hours away with no physical address, just the road name, and no answer to my texts or calls, i was able to find the farm (with a well positioned 71 monte carlo stock car body in the field from the original ad) so i knocked on the door, the sons friend who answered was very kind in not telling me to get the f*** off the property, and he went and woke up the very hungover farmers son (it was 1 PM) so he grabbed his four wheeler and drug it out after pumping up the sun dried tires. i handed him the cash and took off, but first off i had to take a picture That is a homemade trailer, on a 40s car front axle with the knuckles welded solid. I somehow made it 200km back on those tires, axle, and hitch, and when i got to my house the drivers side was damn near flat.  But i stopped at the local coin wash and gave it a bath to get some of the fresh and some of the old bird crap off it And yes thats a custom wet locations outlet box.So my plans are to restore it with some upgrades as well as my ability, which will take some hard work, after that farmer has screwed with it for many years. But as of now, some fresh gas, a battery, and kicking the old foot operated starter, it fired right up, with 25 psi of oil at low idle, and a non working bellows idler, i held the throttle as closely to high idle as possible, and struck my first arc with a shorthood. You're damn right im taking this machine to the grave. So here i guess ill post some pictures, have some beers, ask some dumb questions, and slowly watch my money go to BWER and BWparts, to get this thing back looking good and welding even gooder.
Reply:well what did give for her?  and  what in the box up front?????
Reply:800 on a guaranteed handshake saying it runs and welds, the gas was old and it only coughed a bit when we tried it there. And the old ammo box up front was what held the 20 feet of old dry rotted cable
Reply:I havent done much more than clean up the 4 position switch, and start to disassemble the wiring, etc. So heres something exciting, a video of it runninghttps://www.instagram.com/p/BiNoJQXg-Cx/

Reply:Well it was not a productive night in the shop. armed with an annoying pup and a some wrenches, all i got done was took the front cover off and broke a bunch of bolts. The bolts for the exciter brush holders, are no longer one piece. im going to have to do something about them, hopefully some heat and vice grips will bring those suckers out. ive been needing to get a set of bottles for a while but never got around to it.Also, the 4 bolts that hold the exciter housing to the generator housing. they aint going to come out. i dont think im going to screw with them and risk having them break and not be able to get them out of the holes. i think ill just take the generator off with the exciter housing still on it. seems to be the only way ill be able to kinda restore it the way i want to. and atleast ill be able to clean up the main armature and such that way. More to come, hopefully something productive
Reply:yes like you said  little  heat,, what i do before heat put some high temp anti seize on bolt   then take torch heat light around  ,, once see anti start to bubble she got inside thead  she coming out ,,this works perfect for stud bolts on the mag coil,,, if got tig rig you weld nut on broken bolt then quickly put anti seize on broken bolt no torch needed,,, did find ## on barrel?and check top head may have month & year date block was made
Reply:Yea I've soaked everything in deep creep, I'll try that anti seize trick. I'm just hoping they don't break inside the housing. And no paint was slathered on the generator, I'd have to strip all paint to find it. I'll look up the number stamped on the block
Reply:Got my tanks, and got 3/4 out. The one broke inside. A trip to Crappy tire and to get some easy outs, drilled it out and now there's an easy out stuck in there. Took it to my dads machine shop (Conveniently located at my parents) and tried to mig a ball onto it to get the easy out, out. Well that didn't go as planned. So now tomorrow, we're going to set it up in the mill and get centre so we can drill it out and hopefully just not catch the threads and peel the rest out. Dag gummit this is painful
Reply:I bet your dad was like dambit boy shoulda brought it to me before you broke it off up in it!!"You can't out puke a buzzard"

Reply:Well slow progress as i wait to mill the exciter housing.. Did a rebuild on the carb, ordered parts, and am about to take the janky as intake/exhaust manifold off. Why do people try to weld stuff to cast when you could get a regular old pipe thread pipe and put it on for the exhaust? Also figured out the overflowing carb problem.. somebody "rebuilt" it and forgot parts. hmm..
Reply:On welding the manifolds, a lot of times the threads are rusted out beyond repair and won't hold the new pipe."You can't out puke a buzzard"
Reply:That is true, but either way, new manifold and resonator pipe are on their way!WIRING QUESTION!Looking at how this is wired, as the shunt coils are wired to Bills Type 6090 diagram, where the shunt coils are wired to the engine regulator (Via out wire from 2 position coil) and back to the exciter (Via out wire from 7 position coil)Whats the difference between wiring this way and the regular Blue to rheo / Brown spliced with black to aux?1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
Reply:Well, i guess this ones like one of those one offs with a weird rack mark. These were the only marks that lined up, after about an hour of searching for the damn things. When i was milling the broken bolt i noticed the rack was loose and said "This is FN AWESOME" but containing my excitement, so when i got home i went right to tackling the rack problem, to make sure i dont burn anything up when i get er goin again. As i am not cleaning it up to my point of anal-ness as of right now on the inside of the generator and such, its set and good to go. the loose rack mightve been the cause of the original oem lincoln brushes to wear on a hard angle. And also i got that bolt out, found center on the mill, which ended up showing us this thing aint too.. uhh lets say, circular. Ended up getting a close center on the bolt with an end mill and went 10 thous out from that center each time around until we were able to see the threads all around. peeled those suckers out, chased it and shes good to go!Last edited by 24vwelder; 05-06-2018 at 04:55 PM.1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
Reply:Well duck a duck, put some primer on earlier in the week, and went out and bought paint today, the closest colour i could find without spending hundreds on mixable stuff because im not doing this as well as i want, yet, and test sprayed it on the exciter housing. Well not very good, it doesnt jive with the primer ive got on there. So, ive got to decide whether to get different stuff that will jive with the primer or take all the primer off, and get another primer..But hey, isnt improper wrinkled paint the new style?1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
Reply:I never realized how huge these pictures are, sorry for everyones eyes! After a whole weekend of stripping paint, which included taking the generator and exciter back off, its close! Its 90% painted (Now, engine at time of picture was not painted but is now) All i have left to paint is the front exciter and generator cover, and the faceplate! but i have to wait on switches and such from BWparts.com to complete the faceplate in order to paint. This guy right here is getting excited, so heres a sneak peek of the paint!I have completed my wiring schematics to include a bwparts remote and electric idler along with some help from duaneb55 to make sure i dont burn the thing down, and as soon as i get all the parts, i will be cramming that bish together asap and burnin rod while annoying the crap out of the neighbours1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects

ReplyFarm fresh shorthood buildittle update, all my parts should be in this week! ill be mad if they arent, i want to be burning rod next weekend! Took the tappet cover off for a quick inspection just before it goes into service, and thank god i did. just about every tappet was out of adjustment. one was bottomed, and the rest were probably around .030 / .020 inbetween. they are now adjusted to a perfect .014. Also got the generator cover and exciter nose painted. i need to wait on switches for my idle kit and remote to drill the faceplate properly. im assuming they are just like every other switch but i dont want to drill to a half inch switch and have them be 3/8 or somethin haha Otherwise im pretty much done all i can do, alternator is on, waiting on starter, brushes, insulators, idle kit, remote, manifold+exhaust, rad cap, rad hoses, plug wires, and faceplateAlso soldered the rad overflow tube back on as it broke off1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connectsNot a good day. Reply:Good news, kind of.. Got my package through ups in my hands today, which includes my new manifold and resonator muffler, main brushes, rad hoses, taylor pro plug wires, exciter brush holder insulators, air filter, low mount starter (Which is extremely smaller than i thought) and my faceplate. Everything is installed already except for brushes and faceplate, which i will probably do tomorrow night then have nothing to do all weekend other than wire up what i can haha Really wish my other package was here, wouldve been able to have it running welding and stackin iron this weekend, but sadly ill have to wait (until god knows when) for it to clear customs.Im quite excited to hear it with the resonator muffler on, i havent been able to find a video of an sa200 with one on1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
Reply:In the homeward stretch! Have had lots of troubles with the governor and carb. But its getting better now!First the governor was not functioning correctly, it would try to go WOT all the time and shutter back and forth, so i looked into it and the main bearing was destroyed, absolutely nothing left of it other than the inner and outer race. Got a new R8 bearing (HOOF GD267-C5616 Governor) and its working perfectly! drilled and tapped 2 holes to 10-24 machine screws and loctite'd them for holding down the bearing. So i timed it to #4 cylinder by turning the mag clockwise by hand until it sparks #4 and turning it counterclockwise 1/4 turn to horizontal and set the timing marks on the governor to the cam gear. It was running decent, threw my timing light on it, and it wasnt even on the degree dial. it was far too advanced. so i retarded the mag as much as possible and it still was just barely on the dial, i could just see the markings on the bottom end of the fire. So i took the governor off and jumped it back a tooth, so the punched timing marks dont sit factory like they should. it now sits just back one tooth. So i fired it up, and i had the mag off a bit so it was advanced quite a bit, but i retarded it and now its running great on dead centre. id still like to advance it a couple degrees but its better, i need to make new gaskets for the gov and mag to start with. But heres a finished picture!Tested it once i got it running better with 1/8 6010 downhill and 7/32 7018 and damn does it ever run smooth! The 7/32 was cutting out a little when i first started (Hadnt run too much rod to get the brushes perfect yet) but after i worked it a bit it and got those brushed warmed up it ran smooth! never cut out once after that1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects

Once the correct magneto was installed everything lined up and she fired right up. Who ever had this machine before me ran this way and the head cracked from running hot.Took me a long time to figure out the magneto was the problem. Finally what I did was remove the spark plugs and turn engine by hand and see where it fired in relation to T mark on flywheel. This was after gear timing marks were checked and rechecked .Check this post on how to check cam gear and crank gear timing marks.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...00+gear+timingLast edited by guajilloweld03; 06-13-2018 at 03:16 PM.

Reply:This thing is driving me nuts! Its spitting and sputtering and i cant get it to stop, checked and cleaned the points, theyre set to .015 so within spec, cap and rotor are clean, its timed to 3 degrees advanced, doesnt get better whether i advance it more or set it to DC or retard it a little. Plugs are gapped to .020. Also the alternator isnt charging and i cant figure out why, brand new al531 from bosch, "one wire" with the exciting wire from the oil pressure sensor. has 12v to excite it but it wont. And now the bolt from the alternator bracket is seeping coolant. Damn why do continentals hate me! I want my 74 with no problems back hahahaAlso seems to cut out the arc with 6010, but doesnt with 7018. theres no reason as to why it should, theres no breaks in the armature or commutator, unless one spontaneously showed up since i checked it.Last edited by 24vwelder; 06-16-2018 at 02:40 PM.1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects

Reply:Yes i have followed with the solid core plug wires and D16's, wouldnt run anything other than them in these. and when governor gear is correct, it doesnt run worth a crap and is nowhere close to timed. Have it set at DC with my timing light clearly showing DC on the flywheel timing dial. I will try the .025 and .020 gaps for the plugs and points to see if that helps any1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
Reply:Went through the same deal on magneto of not being on time when all timing gear marks line up. Finally came to the conclusion that the magneto had the wrong impluse coupler. My shorthood came with a Eisemann  magneto, found a Fairbanks Morse FM X4B16-A1 magneto on  Ebay . Installed the FM magneto and she fired up on first crank. What I did was remove all spark plugs and the left #4 hooked to wire and left it setting on manifold . Then turned engine with a ratchet and was able to see how late the magneto was firing. Found a Eisemann magneto manual on www.oldengine.org and confirmed it did not have a 15 degree impluse coupler. These are 60 year old machines, some have had good life's and others have not. Some have had parts stolen and were replaced with what ever the owner could find. It's a lot easier today to find parts and deals because of the internet.Last edited by guajilloweld03; 06-17-2018 at 12:11 AM.

Reply:So here is the DC mark, in all its surprisingly well showing white paintAnd here is where it is currently timed, it appears to show a GN horizontal to the axis rather than vertical like the DC, and the pointer is not pointing at it as i didnt rotate it perfectly to show the mark. its running better as is, but still seems to be coughing while running w/o load, under full load it purrs aggressively perfect (300 amp rod stick) doesnt cough one bit so im wondering if its a fuel issue now.And to the alternator, it is wired up EXACTLY the same as my 74, it is the EXACT same alternator, and it wont charge. I know some alternators require a certain rpm to "Excite" but my 74 would excite at high idle (1500) and when i rev this one far past that it doesnt excite. So im going to go ahead and say its a pooched reman and get another one.1974 Lincoln SA200 Copper converted - Sold1956 SA200 Short Hood 1969 K6090 Redface Purox 50B3 - Harris Regulators - 100 feet 3/8 Grade-T with quick connects
